On September 19, 2016 Dr Peffers, the professor of the Sophmore Colloquium, spoke to the class about an importatn subject. Prior to the start of WRT-382, I had put little thought into my resume and cover letter. I didn’t realize that hiring employers spend less than a minute on each applicant’s resumes. I understand now that there has to be a clear and consistent theme to market and brand yourself. I also know now that having a skimable resume can make you seem more appealing than others even if they are more qualified. After learning about the components of a professional portfolio, I have learned how to condense my qualifications while modifying them to the specific employer.

Guest Speaker Brook Oliver, with the Sierra College Career Transfer Connections, came to speak to our class about the importance and foundation of a proper resume. I found this topic to be very informative. Particularly, since I have never applied for a job, due to the fact that, I have been self-employed my entire life. I learned that the resume can be a foundation for an effective interview. Additionally, the resume is a bullet point reference of an individual’s skills, education, work experience, and accomplishments, and built upon the description related to the position of the job. I found Ms. Oliver to be extremely informative with regards to careers in Law Enforcement.

When I started this assignment, I listed everything as I thought it should be. But trouble to arise was when I read the resume back to myself. One challenge I faced was to word things in an order, so they are short and concise, yet descriptive enough to understand. Every time I thought I was being descriptive, it tends out to be either too long or too confusing for anyone but myself to understand. there’s a continuous process of editing, re-editing, and editing some more. If the applicant lacks the qualifications on your list, you get rid of them.
