Location

Russia has 16,377,742 sq km of land and 720,500 sq km of water combining to be a massive total of 17,098,242 sq km in total. Russia’s geographic coordinates are 60 00 N, 100 00 E and is also the largest country in the world. Russia is approximately 1.8 times the size of the united states. Russia currently boarders 14 countries Azerbaijan, China, Belarus, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Mongolia, Poland, Ukraine, Norway, Lithuania, and North Korea. Russia has a massive 37,653 km of coastline ranging from the northern artic to the northern pacific. People mainly reside in the Western European side of the country near Ukraine and Finland. In 2014 tensions had reached a boiling point between Ukraine and Russia as the Crimean Peninsula was annexed into the Russian federation. Since then 4,000 U.S. troops have been stationed in Eastern Europe serving as an armored and aerial brigade combat team. On the other side of the continent Russia and Japan are still at war. A dispute over the southern Kurill islands has prevented either country from signing a peace agreement. In 1855 both Japan and Russia signed the Treaty of Shimoda which relinquished Russia’s ownership of the islands to Japan. However, after World War 2 Russia took them back and by 1949 had evacuated all 17,000 residents from the islands to mainland Japan. In today’s time, there are 30,000 Russian citizens on the islands and a small Russian military presence. President Putin has indicated that he will return the two closest islands to Japan but made no mention of the other two. The two islands Russia was willing to return make up approximately only 7% of the disputed territory. The islands are a tourist hotspot because of the birdlife and volcanos, however more importantly for each country they are thought to have offshore reserves of oil
