Per the code of ethics of the National Association of Social Workers.”The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of individuals who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty”(). Social workers who work in the field, help promote social justice, and social change on many different levels to help empower people to improve their lives for the better. These workers are aware of ethnic and cultural multiplicity and strive to end discrimination, oppression, poverty, and other forms of social injustice. Earlier this year Democratic Michigan Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence along with her cosponsors introduced H.R. 1069, “Timely Mental Health for Foster Youth Act” into Congress. Once passed, this bill will improve the overall mental health care of those children and adolescents living in the foster care system. Currently, there are no laws to help protect this vulnerable population against timely mental health screenings. 1069. “Social workers pursue social change, particularly with and on behalf of vulnerable and oppressed individuals and groups of people”(). By advocating for this bill in Congress, social workers are promoting the issue of discrimination, within the foster care system. According to laws foster care children must receive health assessments within thirty days of entering the system. However, mental health assessments are not required within those thirty days. Social justice highly needs to prevent oppression against this population. Therefore, social workers are required to advocate for resources and the equality of opportunity for children to have meaningful mental health care as soon as they enter the foster care
