The author takes a transition from the early positive position centered around comradery to explain the offseason losses the program has suffered within the past year. Losing long-term captain Shea Weber in a trade for the younger P.K. Subban and then soon after, losing Weber’s replacement Mike Fisher due to retirement. Ryan Ellis is out due to a knee injury and James Neal was taken in the Las Vegas expansion draft. Frederick Gaudreau and Pontus Aberg did not make the roster despite top performance in the playoffs. Rexrode gives no evidence or further explanation for these player loses and I believe an explination to why losing these men could be so crucial to the franchise. Rexrode will follow the conversation about the team’s …show more content…
To write a piece on if another championship being “on the table” more sustainable evidence would need to be presented. While the evidence given was fine and helped the reader grasp the uncertainty about this team going forward it is the evidence not given which is concerning. He acknowledges that other teams have a much narrower range of speculation but doesn’t get into any other organizations business besides the reminding the reader James Neal was taken from the Predators by the new Las Vegas Golden Knights. Along with avoiding coverage on other teams in their division or conference, Rexrode said very little about why the Predators would return or not this year to the playoffs. Analyzing the article I believe the author spoke to his audience with too much hope that they would understand the magnitude this offseason will have on this’s proformance. Unfortunantly, I found this article lacking of evidence to support the claims rather than the evidence being present proving to be false. With such polar claims to being addressed in this article, one would hope the author could provide more backing evidence. Furthermore, since he chose not to personally take a on the subject I believe he should have provided even more evidence then to back his informational piece from both sides. I think the conversation that not only was a new team entered into the league this August but that it happened in the
When most hockey fans hear about the Vancouver Canucks, losing is one of the first things to come to mind. Just because the team hasn’t won a Stanley Cup, this idea of losing is false. By looking at the Canucks early years, their greatest players, and their numerous trips to the Stanley Cup Finals, a clearer picture can be formed. Exploring these areas show that the Canucks were, and are, a competitive and talented team. During their early years in the NHL, the Vancouver Canucks played very poorly.
The hockey world is, and, remains an integral field of sports journalism. This essay will focus on the complexity of the National Hockey League, or the NHL, for short, is both a league and a corporate enterprise. This piece will examine the enduring practice of traditional journalistic representations of hockey and demonstrate the obstacles many journalists face when writing a comprehensive article. The task becomes difficult especially when candidates wholly adhere to a type of hockey lingo-rhetoric to circumvent speaking to the underlying issues in the NHL. This paper will express personal opinions and, correspondingly will explore a few of the social and political controversies. Also, a personal interview and commentary will ground the
“Girl Unprotected”, by Laura Robinson, was published on May 11, 2008. In this essay, the author informs the reader about the dark side of hockey culture in Canada. Serious, formal, and objective tones are used throughout this essay in order to create a negative tone without using negative forms of diction. This technique is used so that the writing shows no bias, however, has the ability to sway the reader's opinion. In doing this, the author keeps an objective, unwavering stand on the issue yet plays with the reader's sense of pathos and ethos. Pathos and Ethos are used in the essay as successful forms of rhetoric. Robinson begins with a second person point of view, connecting with the reader and enticing them to continue reading. Although, as we move forward in the text, the author takes on an objective, the first-person point of view on the court cases later described. The essay takes on an inductive form of reasoning and argumentation. This is proven in the way that the author discusses the issues of a small town hockey team and moves forward to discuss the coaches and players of the much larger NHL organization.
There are many images that the word hockey conjures up. Gen X-ers might remember “Game on!” from Wayne’s World, while San Antonians might think of hockey as the “other” sport played in the AT&T center. Edward McClelland’s article “Blame Canada! Fighting Has Turned Hockey Immoral” attempts to explore the differences between National Hockey League (NHL) and international styles of play and call for reforms to the current practices in the NHL. In order to evaluate McClelland’s article thoroughly, it is important to consider the use of rhetorical strategies and structure.
As the Golden Knights prepare for their first season, it is vital that they capitalize on the excitement of being the first professional sports team in Las Vegas. This entails selling enough tickets to fill the arena and creating a buzz in the city to get people to start following the team and becoming fans. If they can’t create enough interest in the team during our first few years, it will create a bad first impression and they will likely struggle for fan interest for a long time. Therefore, they need to focus on establishing a strong presence in the city and build pride for the team and city of Las Vegas.
In fact, it pains me more than anything to write this column. Being so close to the championship and having it stolen away is agonizing and will make for a long cold winter. Watching those excruciating and testing 68 years become 69 is tormenting. The trophy was within reach; in fact, after the Davis home run, I began imagining the party scene at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario if the Indians to come through with just a bit more postseason magic. But in reflection, this was a team that wasn’t supposed to be there. This team hadn’t the athletes, the depth, or the experience, but they never gave up. This team had the heart, the fight, and the will of a champion. Unfortunately, time and destiny did them
Let's begin with the last win the Flyers enjoyed last Sunday in Vancouver as I was there to see the mostly uneventful (but good road win) game. This was Neuvirth's 6th start in 7 games, I was pretty sure that Mason was getting the start after being snubbed in the second game of the back to back set in Alberta. There's definitely a message been sent but what does it mean? Is it Neuvirth's job and he stays and Mason leaves or is it an audition for the open market and Mason's been told this and has to sit tight? For the most part Neuvirth's game has been better but we've seen in the last 2 outings he's not stealing us a game and now Mason's cold and quite possibly bitter unless the aforementioned (sit tight) theory is in play. In “Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey Hey Goodbye,” Tim Bowling, an author, poet, and a fishing boat deckhand (Stewart et al 237), articulates how professional hockey has evolved over his lifetime. He laments how a game he was enamoured with no longer captures his complete attention and is not as relevant in his life as it once was. However, Bowling admits he still has a sheepish curiosity for the latest news and highlights (238), is still “mildly attracted” (239) to the game for its grace, beauty, and skill (239), and yearns for a Stanley Cup Final with two Canadian teams; most importantly a final with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the
The game of hockey has shaped the world’s view; reinforcing the idea that hockey is Canada’s national identity. The Summit Series was an eight-game hockey tournament played between Canada and the Soviet Union, which was scheduled for September 1972. Canada’s finest hockey players from the National Hockey League played the élite amateurs from the Soviet Union in a friendly series. The series took place during the cold war, which allowed for patriotism in the Soviet Union, and especially Canada. This paper will explore how the 1972 Summit Series was a defining moment in Canadian history and how it brought the nation together. Specifically, it will examine how the Summit Series was larger than life, the purpose of the series for both Canada and
The wild made the playoffs in 2013-2014 and won against the Colorado Avalanche in game seven to go on to lose to the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round. The next year they had another successful season and beat the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the playoffs to move on and lose to the Blackhawks again. In the 2015-2016 season, they made the playoffs by a slim amount and lost to the Dallas Stars in the first round 4-2. In the previous season, the Wild started out great and mid-season broke their franchise record for longest winning streak only to have it broken by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Ever since the loss, the wild had a lot of ups and downs for the rest of the season before clinching the second seed in the playoffs that season. When they went to the playoffs they lost to the St. Louis blues 4-1 in the first round. It was considered one of the biggest upsets in the playoffs. Aside from the seasonal progress, we have not credited who got them there. The wild have had a first round draft pick in every draft from when the team joined the league except the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. The biggest contributors to the team started with Marian Gaborik who was selected number three overall in the team's first draft. He went on to score the first franchise goal and lead the team in scoring the first two years. The other main contributors were Mikko Koivu who is currently the captain and has played the most games out of any Wild players past or present. The smaller helpers were Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Brent Burns, Nick Leddy, Mikael Granlund, Mathew Dumba, and Joel Eriksson Ek. At the end of the day, you can look at the wild and either say this team has had a great lifespan or say this team could’ve done so much better. Whichever one you think in my opinion they have made the league a better place and have truly brought joy back to the fans in the State of
Just before the game started at Verizon Center in Washington D.C. Tuesday night. I pondered to myself why we desired to retain the Stanley Cup. The dedication comes from what happened to the Red Wings after winning last season. Unfortunately, a car accident injured two players. The team wore a patch honoring
The Nashville Predators have been going through a seemingly endless process since entering the NHL in 1998. It did not take the Predators long to establish a successful and competitive nature among the franchise. Their first five seasons they struggled becoming a team and missed the playoffs, however, they have come together and made the playoffs every year since. The Predator’s on-ice performance was consistently among the top three teams in the league, but still faced many challenges.
So where does all the codswallop, all the stories about hockey’s demise come from? They come from immigration patterns which have seen millions arriving in Canada from cultures where hockey is barely heard of. They come from melting ice caps, a dwindling number of backyard rinks, falling enrolments in hockey youth programs.
Although men and women’s basketball are closer to being equal than softball and baseball, the leagues are still separate. America has a women’s league and a men’s league and never the two shall meet. A woman is not allowed in the NBA since she has the WNBA. The separation is strong, obvious, and seemingly permanent. Like basketball, they created softball to play indoors during the winter. The game earned the name softball and due to its easier properties was often “regarded as baseball’s stepchild” (Ring, p. 60). They passed the game down to women, as it seemed safe enough to limit the risk of injury. And so the separation began.
In this case, loss aversion can also be related to the NHL players. No person wants to lose
