The Effect Of Global Warming On Hurricanes Global warming has been a widely discussed topic that has sparked up many oppositions on the basis of its effect on our environment. “Hurricanes, Irma, Harvey Restart Debate On Climate Change and Warmer Oceans” is an article written by Stuart Leavenworth stating many oppositions on the effects of global warming and how it's affects our environment by becoming a destructive force that has been intensifying the power and speed of natural forces such as hurricanes. Leavenworth examines a recent study by Peter J. Webster, an atmospheric scientist at the Georgia institute of technology. The research indicated that both hurricane Harvey and Irma intensified …show more content…
“Natural variability and warmer sea temperatures”(qtd in Leavenworth 1). Which stresses on the fact that with these different environmental combinations it can lead to catastrophic environmental problems by ultimately increase the intensity of the hurricanes, thus supporting the fact that warmer water can serve as a source of fuel for hurricanes since all obvious signs are pointing at global warming as the cause of this problem. Kevin Trenberth, the head climate analysis section at National center for atmospheric research, specifies that the surface temperatures were 2.7 to 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit above average before hurricane Harvey hit causing it to intensify as it came into contact with the warm oceanic temperature in the gulf of Mexico eventually reaching Texas leave destruction in its wake. Therefore, this study examines how their has been a pattern in the increase of the intensity of hurricanes that have occurred during warm ocean temperature, such as hurricane Harvey and Irma that are projected to be a category 5 hurricane reaching speeds of up to 185 mph with a destructive force enough to drain water away from shorelines and destroy homes. Therefore many scientists in the field of meteorology have come to the scientific consensus that global warming is a real problem caused by human activities and greenhouse gas emission. Also, that we must find a way to solve this issue before it gets out of
I have always found the ocean to be a very intriguing part of the Earth. There are infinitely many discoveries that have yet to be made about it. My fascination with the ocean sparked the idea to do my class paper on hurricanes and what they are along with their effects. I remember hearing about all the damages from Hurricane Katrina after it hit the coast near New Orleans. The only information I really know about them is what is briefly covered on the news. I thought it would be interesting to discover the true effects they can have on not only people that endure them, but also the environment as it gets ripped to shreds by the plethora of winds and water.
Also to make Americans more aware in climate change political issues. Scott Martelle targets Trump’s main administrative climate-change skeptics, Pruitt. Scott Martelle suggests if Pruitt reduces fossil-fuel emissions, it would benefit helping global warming. Which by the help with 350 Madison, could pressure Pruitt to discuss the issue publicly. Other than discussing how to help tame the issue. Scott Martelle reports how global warming is affecting with our current hurricanes. From experts with profound credibility, insists global warming makes storms stronger, quicker and bigger. Also affecting how warm the ocean and atmosphere is. Warmer ocean water supports more powerful hurricanes, while warmer atmospheres, holds more evaporated water, forcing heavier
Climate change is one of the leading global and political problems we face today. Recently, Texas experienced the worst flooding from a major hurricane in their history. Aside from Harvey in the United States, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal also had dangerous monsoons that caused massive loss of life and property. Although there have been fewer hurricanes in the last decade they have become significantly stronger causing more devastation wherever they make landfall. While Harvey gained strength just before landfall it stalled over Houston causing massive flooding before returning to the Gulf again. Climate change remains a divisive political issue, with a significant percentage of Republicans saying they don’t believe the scientific consensus that man-made industrial emissions are accelerating the rise of global warming due to climate
The intensity, frequency, and duration of North Atlantic hurricanes, as well as the frequency of category 4 and 5 hurricanes, have all increased since the early 1980s (Bell 2012). The increase in hurricanes can be linked to higher sea surface temperatures caused by multiple outside sources. Human induced emissions of heat-trapping gases and particulate pollution are two of the possible sources that are affecting the sea surface temperature. Humans are the main contributor contributing to climate change and global warming, but most seem not to care. Not only is the amount of hurricanes increasing, but heat waves are increasing and intensifying in some western parts of the country. Heat waves have become more frequent across The United States in recent decades. Western regions are setting records for numbers of heat waves and droughts in the 2000s. Data collected suggests that the droughts over the last decade in the West represent the driest conditions in the last 800 years (Vose 2005). With varying weather all over the country, the real estate market is beginning to be affected as well. Popular ski capitals will no longer have their icy slopes and eventually the popular beaches will be too hot to visit or will not have any beach left, causing drops in vacation rentals and permanent housing
The flood reached the second floor of many apartment buildings and houses. Many scientists say that the hurricane was caused by climate change because of global warming. While others say that hurricane harvey has nothing to do with the global warming. I believe that hurricane harvey and many other storms are caused by climate change. Global warming is a threat to people, weather, animals and earth.
Greshko explains that this hurricane season has been so active because atmospheric conditions and surface seas temperatures have been warmer than normal. There have been other major hurricanes to make landfall on the continental US over the years but this season has still been unusual with two category 4 storms hitting land in a small space of time. It seems as though the longer it goes, the more severe it gets. Finally, Greshko concludes this article by talking about the cause of this catastrophic hurricane season being climate change. The climate plays a big role in weather and the warmer conditions will make for much worse tropical storms in the Atlantic. In the future individual will drop more precipitation in the future, since warmer air can hold more water vapor. The warmer temperatures are a result of human activity an if the climate continues to warm up then its predicted that storm surges will become much worse.
Hurricanes in movies, such as The Day After Tomorrow, are city destroying monsters that make nightmares come true. While this may be an extreme exaggeration of superstorms, New York has suffered from the destructive force of said superstorms. Three years ago, Hurricane Sandy swept into New York leaving only devastation in its wake. Sandy, while not nearly as devastating as some hurricanes, was the biggest seen since hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. Whilst Sandy is still called a hurricane, it is actually an extra-tropical storm, which unlike hurricanes are caused by temperature contrasts in the atmosphere. These temperature contrasts are being made more extreme from the climate change and has been effecting our raising sea level. The destruction caused by Sandy has made New York come up with better ways of handling natural disasters. Climate change has begun to have an affect on our super-storms and because of that, new solutions need to be made in order to prevent devastation 's from extra-tropical storms like Hurricane Sandy.
Climate change has progressively become more problematic for coastal societies in recent history as a result of elevated greenhouse gas emission levels across the planet. Increases in sea level and sea surface temperature, as well as atmospheric pressure accretion, are unnatural effects directly linked to increased carbon dioxide (CO2) release into the atmosphere. Some of the sources of these increases have come from the greater use of coal and gasoline for industrial and transportation purposes. Hurricanes (tropical cyclones), most common in the North Atlantic region, have intensified due to this “global warming”. But occurrences of such events are predicted to diminish (Emanuel, 2011). Hurricanes are expected to form less frequently in the North Atlantic, but they will become more intense and powerful over time. As high intensity hurricanes become more common events along the densely populated eastern coast of the United States, more resilient engineering solutions will need to be implemented by current generations to reduce their destructive impact.
Michael E Mann, publish a story in the Guardian questioning whether climate change made the recent storms deadlier. He did not claim Hurricane Harvey primarily caused by global warming but certainly made an already bad and difficult situation even more so. Mann explains climate change-related factors will have at least some impact on hurricane season activity, say worsened the flooding. One thing that causes Hurricane Harvey to increase into an intense storm is because of the storm surge was higher, which means the sea level is higher. Anthropogenic impacts, such as oil drilling play a role in Sea level rise – is more than half a foot (15cm) over the past few decades. To understand
An article on Newsela, “PRO/CON: Did Hurricane Harvey Show the Reality of Climate Change?,” was just recently written pertaining to the massive Hurricane Harvey that happened only a few weeks ago. Wayne Madsen, the writer of “PRO: Yes, Harvey Shows Climate Change is Real,” argues that Hurricane Harvey proves global warming exists. On the opposition, “CON: No, Hurricanes Have Plagued Texas For a Long Time,” Whitt Flora believes that global warming had no effect on this disastrous hurricane. However, logos from the supporting article reveal that there has been reportedly more severe storms in these past few years: “With drastic climate change, the world is experiencing historic
Hurricanes start over tropical and subtropical sea water. It begins when warm water, damp air, and solid winds impact and make a turning heap of storms and mists. A typhoon may last a couple of hours or a few days.
The question still remains, how does climate change actually affect these hurricanes? Global warming is known for causing higher ocean temperatures; It is predicted temperature would rise by 3° to 5°C (34° to 41° Fahrenheit) by the year 2100. Respectively, the number of hurricanes may also flourish expeditiously since hurricanes are formed when there is warm bodies of water. With the increase in temperature, ice would likewise melt worldwide from sources such as: mountain glaciers, polar ice caps, ice sheets covering West Antarctica and Greenland, and the Arctic sea ice. In fact, scientists anticipate sea levels to rise by at least 25 meters (82 feet) by the year 2100. Consequently, when there is a rising sea level, it is known to cause a more
Hurricanes are one of nature’s most natural occurrences and intense phenomenal storms. Yet, as phenomenal as they are, they are still one of the deadliest and disastrous natural occurrences that continue to plague costal residents with fears of their homes being destroyed, their towns wiped out, and loved ones either disappearing or dying.
Thesis Statement: Global warming is a growing concern of scientists and researchers who believe that it is a serious problem for our planet. The concerns and research have also been questioned and have even been called myths. Millions of people find themselves affected by these weather pattern changes and are concerned for their futures. Activists on both sides of the argument are very passionate and not afraid to attack each other in every way they can. There are many questions that are still not answered, however, we continue to see drastic weather changes to Earth. We must go beyond the arguments and learn as much as we can to stop what could possibly lead to the destruction of our planet, our way of life and our future.
In recent years, the controversial subject of global warming has been more predominantly brought to our attention. Is the threat of global warming real? Is it man-made or is this just a natural cycle of earth? Does it really affect earth’s inhabitants? Should action be taken against it? If so, what kind and to what extent? It cannot be only a coincidence that the alarmingly rapid climate change coincides perfectly with the increased amount of pollutants that humans release into the environment. The once stable climate has in recent years begun to skyrocket, thus altering the delicate structure of earthly life. This proves to be hazardous to the future of the planet; some people worry that many of the resources the environment provides that
