When to Say No

As with all negotiations there will be times when an agreement just cannot be reached. I have watched a few magicians continue to toss value ads into the conversation. All they end up doing is discounting their services. It becomes obvious that they will be there to perform any way. There is no reason they cannot provide a whole lot more at no additional cost.

A magician must have a bottom line. That bottom line is where “enough is enough”. One just cannot provide $800 worth of entertainment for $150. That is, you cannot do it if you want to keep your professional profile near the $800 figure. The world is packed with magicians who ask for $200 but end up working for $50 because they need the work.

Then just as professional as your conversation has been let them know you are not available. Follow all this up asking them to keep you in mind for future events.

You may even offer to help find, or recommend another entertainer for the event. This is a fantastic position to be in. The organization will recognize you as a person willing to help. They can understand you not being available through negotiation conversations. Recommending another just adds favorable thoughts to you as a professional.

We all have a circle of friends that we can recommend. When I pass on a recommendation I am very careful not to mention any of that individual’s costs. Each magician must make his/her own quote and go through the negotiation process on their own. When I have to say no it usually sounds something like this:

“I would love to be involved with your event. I’m sorry I just cannot be there based on our discussion at this point. However, I do have a couple magicians I often work with that I could recommend. Their names are (give name and contact phone numbers). Would you like me to call them, share your information and have them give you a call?”

Only one has asked me to call my referral first and have him call the organization. Usually they like to handle the conversations themselves. Even if I am not asked to call them, I still do. I want to give them a “heads up” that they may get a call from the organization. My
