It had been 30 years since Antarctica had melted and society in the mainland was beginning to break down. Buildings lay dry and burned down, except for some places which got tropical storms almost daily. Minnesota had been washed out, all the rivers flooding. The buildings lay abandoned, sinking into the swampy marsh that the state had become, along with Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa. All this had been the result of the Great Lakes spilling over into the land because of rainfall. Living here was not possible. It was where you were sent to prison from the Ocean Districts. Ever since then, Marc blamed himself for his parents death and couldn’t lose another family member. He knew that within a year of getting to the Midwestern Marshes, Bella would die. Which is why he was going 50 miles per hour through a street filled with swimmers and children playing in the water. The police boat darted through the buildings, trying to get away from Marc. It was like a police chase in reverse. Another boat zoomed in behind Marc and the man in front pulled out a pistol and started to shoot with very bad aim. He hit the glass windows on buildings and they shattered, scattering swimmers and spraying shards into the water. Meanwhile the front police boat with Bella neared the edge of the city. Once it got out of the city it would be too fast for Marc’s small boat. It rounded the last turn around the skyscrapers. It was gone. It left its wake and zoomed across the 200 miles of ocean. The boat would reach the mainland with Bella in about an hour. Marc stopped his boat, defeated. The other boat came in behind him and the man lowered his gun. They pulled up next to Marc and the man in front jumped into his boat. “What were you doing?! Hey kid, speak up!” “I was following the boat.” “Who is that girl to you?” “Nobody. I was just racing the boat,” Marc lied. “Did you steal anything?” “No.” The policeman gave him a small fine for
