Nertile Latifi and Brikena Sela Julie Kolgjini Writing Seminar 0502-227 October 07, 2008 What is power, and how does it present itself in our lives? We know for certain that it proves as the one thing that either keeps people together, makes them revolt, or changes history overall. But what is it really? Is it the ability to do or act, or is it political/national strength? Does it always have to be represented by a person in charge? Or is it just something in our minds that has the possession to control our influence. There are so many meanings behind this short yet ‘powerful’ word, such as that which is discussed in Orwell’s Animal Farm, and that which is part of human nature. To begin with, various resources provide …show more content…
In adulthood power still shows, but differs from the naïve use in childhood. Adulthood power is weighed more definite. Visvira is in her first real relationship where she just started to go out with her new boyfriend. From the first day on, each side shows indirectly his and her strengths and powers. What they’ve learned until now is that one always has to give in, if it’s worth the sacrifice. Visvira’s boyfriend for example learned this earlier in his teenage-years, and decided to be the weaker one, who’d rather do what the powerful tell them to, than risk on his own. Hence, Visvira turns out to be dominant in the relationship. She decides what they’re going to do, when, and why. Visvira got so good in using her power it’s even helping in her career. The power she has at home with her family and with her boyfriend gives her confidence and strengthens her so much, that she’s not afraid of being dismissed when coming up with new ideas. After Visvira and her boyfriend move in and get married, she even makes more money than him, which presents another big presence of power. Her life goes on like this when they have children too. She keeps on making the decisions because she wears the pants in the family. But as her children grow up, guess what they’re going to do? Like their mother, they’re going to fight for their own power, and Visvira gets to her last part of life: “Senior-hood”. She knows now, she isn’t the boss anymore, but the power she lost is given to her
Power, a tool, a quality, an influence over others, in other words, a sense of control. In relation to this, those that are given or even earned a great amount of power should use it moderately. In the world we live in today, many “leaders” use their power negatively, resulting in unfairness to others.
Power is seen throughout the book Serena by Ron Rash, in many different ways. Something to be desired, to be feared, or to be used as a way of control, power is very present in the lives of Mr. Pemberton and his wife, Serena. Total power over others, the power to rule without objection and protest is the most noticeable. This is the type of power that Serena holds; a complete power and captivation over everyone she meets. But the power she possesses still isn’t enough for her, and throughout the entire book Serena continues to gain power over others and use this power, adding intensity to the meaning of the book. For Serena, power is only the beginning.
Power is the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. Like Adolf Hitler and the play Macbeth, it is clear that power can be used in
Tenia has power with her friends because she has qualities they value. Tenia suggested to go on a picnic, her friends try to clear their schedule because they like her and feel understood by her. Tenia has a way of making a group feel calm, at ease, and stress free.
Different discussion on power is particularly helpful in delineating meanings of power. What kinds of power are relevant to a study of gender? The distinction between “power over” and “power to” is useful here, “power over” being the ability to cause someone else to do something not in their own interest, while “power to” constitutes autonomy. These ways to understand power are fundamentally different, and conflating them is the source of much confusion about power (Wylie 1992). Kent describes the “absence of power” (meaning the absence of “power over”), and provides a typology of symmetrical and asymmetrical power in gender relationships. Sweely notes power in social relations, access to knowledge, and access to the supernatural. Power can also be multi-centered. Woodhouse-Beyer implies that power is the ability to send “messages” affecting “beliefs, emotions, and perceptions of indigenous populations”—thus power is perceived in the hands of the women mediators of a creolized culture. These play demonstrate that power is not given or taken once and for all; it needs to be maintained, and must be negotiated. Several characters acknowledge or imply that power cannot be reified as a “possession,” but that it is contingent and shifting. Power may be manipulated through control of
Power Power is defined as the ability to do something or act in a particular way. Power has its many effects; the most popular effects are that powerful people are rude and selfish. Powerful people can be completely different people such as they are rich, smart or even strong, but they all have that one thing in common; irresponsibility. Their power will be eventually ripped away from them , they just do not know how to handle their power. Their power usually throws them in the opposite direction then they should be going.
Power is defined as the ability to do or act or having strength. It is the basis of all humanity; it determines who can do what and who is at the top of the empirical hierarchy. In The Thousand and One Nights, power is shown in every story and character, whether it be from an exorbitant amount or an utter lack of power. In a kingdom terrorized by a merciless ruler who was destroying the female population, one young woman gives herself up in order to help the people. Shahrazad volunteers to be given to King Shahrayar, knowing that she could be sacrificed at any given moment, but ultimately wins Shahrayar over with her power. Throughout the collection of stories, the power of women, intellect, and words are observed.
Power is used in various forms all over society. It is the ability to have control over others however this ability can be cherished or abused.
Personally I think power is when someone/something has control over a situation or person. Power can cause or prevent an action and is an act that influences people's beliefs or abilities. Power is everywhere it changes lives everyday. Impacting people's decisions or question their true beliefs. Who has it though? Parents usually have power and control over decisions you make. They gain that power when you're born because they are responsible for you until you're old enough. Coaches are very powerful especially to kids. Kids look up to coaches and want their coaches to think the best of them. President Obama and the government have a lot of power. President Obama gains that power when coming president he obviously has people that support his
Power deals with having the capability to directly influence the actions of others and oneself, but there is much more to it than that. It is a combination of a title, honor, and position that many strive towards attaining. Power can be commonly mistaken as solely having authority to control others, but the true meaning of power defines how the world runs. Everything revolves around power. Power contributes to everything from plots in movies to the world of politics. Currently, there are candidates running huge campaigns who are pouring their life into giving speeches and making good impressions on voters. They are doing that because they want to have power over the country and control the important decisions that affect it. Obviously, power is the main driving force behind countless things.
Having Power can be defined as the deliberate control over the beliefs, emotions and behaviors of other people. Power can be related to taking decisions and implementing those decisions. Power can easily influence life personally as there are many things that can easily have control over you, for example, parents can have power over you, as they are free to make all the decisions relating to the child’s welfare as they see fit. Parents are also allowed to discipline the child without the child’s say, this shows that parents are able to control our lives and our behaviour as children and make decisions for us without our say.
Understandings of the over-arching term of ‘power’ have constantly changed through the passing of each generation. Historically, power demonstrated in Western visual arts has always been portrayed through wealth and authority. We live in a world dominated by different degrees of power. In today’s era, every step and every action we take, has some parameter caused by ‘power’. It may be school rules, regulations and laws, or physical strength, but no matter what, power always limits us. According to the Cambridge dictionary, the current meaning of what power is, falls into three main categories of definitions. These are; power is the ability to control people and events; power is the amount of political control a person or group has in a country; and power is strength. The sub-theme of our exhibition; military power, falls into all three of these readings. The name of our sub-themed exhibition, ‘Military Power’ is derived from the ability of the theme military, in relation to visual arts, to illustrate the positive and negative consequences of power. This includes physical and emotional confrontation associated with the power of weapons, soldiers, war, and hardships. Whilst also including physical and emotional determination associated with
Power, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is defined as the “possession of control, authority, or influence over others” and as “the ability to control people.” The struggle for power is an immensely discussed issue in our world today, including in our popular literature. Everyone has different thoughts on what having power truly means, how power can be obtained and whether obtaining power is worth the consequences that follow. In Divergent (2011), Veronica Roth shows how the post-apocalyptic society divided up to create different forms of power. But once the balance of power is destroyed, the story is able to convey how each form can affect society’s well-being. Comparatively, in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
This small reading explains in more detail what is power and how it can be used to promote change. Explaining how people, can exercise power and how the state can then interpret that power.
Power means to be on top, that there is no competition against you. I personally believe power gets you respect. People follow a powerful person. A powerful person is someone who does anything that they please in any particular way without any restraints. Another the way of having power to be financially successful.
