Ethics helps one to understand the concepts of right and wrong, while also teaching us what it means to be moral. Factors including religion, beliefs, feelings, and our culture are the foundation of the decisions we make in life, but is not the sole voice of reason. In this scenario of What Would You Do, a hair dresser begins by asking her client about her boyfriend and if he is tall, dark and handsome. The client proceeds to respond but is interrupted once her white boyfriend walks into the shop. The hair dresser then bashes the interracial couple stating, “you are an embarrassment to the black family, you should be with a strong black man.” Throughout the video, several clients defend the couple and explain that love conquers all and if …show more content…
This is the wrong thing to do because the right thing is to alleviate the situation not make it worse. Additionally, if one ignores the situation this will also be wrong because the couple is being dehumanized and their human dignity is being disrespected. Furthermore, if I choose to shift the hairdressers focus to something else and protect the couple from this unjust situation, I can protect their dignity and their rights. This is the best way to handle the situation because considering we are all children of God we must love each other as God loves us, and ensure that everyone is treated equally. As Martin Luther King states “unconditional love will have the final say in reality.” This ethical dilemma relates to the philosophy course content because as we grow older we begin to think for ourselves and depend less on our parents. Philosophy allows us to set aside our beliefs, traditions, and culture to focus on whether good or harm is experienced by the people involved and whether individuals are being treated the way they are entitled to be treated. Paying attention to business ethics is crucial to all companies, including business owners. Human resources functions and associates directly with most ethical challenges in the workplace. In the film, Office Space, director Mike Judge brings the viewer inside the mind of Peter Gibbons. Peter is not happy at his job as a computer programmer at Initech Corporation. Unable to endure another moment of the tedious, soul-sucking routine and trivial annoyances at Initech; Peter’s soon to be ex-girlfriend talks him into seeing a hypnotherapist. Everyday health care workers around the world are faced with tough decisions. The law guides many decisions but some decisions require ethical considerations. Making good ethical decisions is not always as easy as it seems. Making ethical decisions is even harder when the primary intention is to be helpful, but it is beyond an employee’s qualifications.
Everyday individuals are faced with issues associated with ethical dilemmas. Ethical dilemmas involve an individual’s behavior toward a moral standard, which may have been established from previous generations and passed along. In upholding the standards taught individual may be forced to take a particular action involving a decision when a behavior is considered non-ethical is when an ethical dilemma occurs. At the BSSL we would like to make work a legal, profitable, and comfortable environment to be at during your careers here with us. We are going to start implementing an open door policy. The first takeaway from this video I learned was the emergence of the Right to Know policy in 1983, which developed OSHA’s creation. The Right to Know policy was introducing the concept that an individual has the right to know about chemicals, and more accurately, chemical hazards which the workers, in their facilities, were using. The second takeaway was OSHA’s biggest challenge being safety implementation. Statistically, every day at work, 12 people are killed; every year, 3 million are injured with much more that go undocumented. These injuries are completely preventable.
I enjoyed interviewing Lillian Thomas, Nurse Manager of NHC in Greenwood, South Carolina. The interview was held in her office on December 2, 2016. During the interview, we discussed the importance of ethics, nursing challenges, and how to behave in the workplace..
Ethical dilemmas are particularly sensitive issues in the workplace because the well-being of the individuals and the organization as a whole are at stake. Employees must feel as though they are being supported and not punished, and should not feel as though they were being put on display; their dignity should always remain intact. This paper examines how, as a high school principle, I would address the issue of one of the high school teachers becoming addicted to prescription drugs.
Currently I see myself as a student transitioning into a professional career. I am an older student and therefore have life experiences that have taught me and guided me in ethical and professional behavior. I believe that we should always be learning and developing our behavior personally and professionally. I have many strengths, but professionally and in the social work field my top strengths are empathy, organization, and understanding. These strengths have come naturally to me but have been enhanced by the events of my life. Having been through many difficult and traumatic events in my life gives me a broader perspective in situations. I have the ability to see the bigger
Racial profiling is a term society has become familiar with in the past few years; however, it is not a new phenomenon. Racial profiling according to Fredrickson, "occurs when law enforcement officials rely on race, skin color, and/or ethnicity as an indication of criminality, reasonable suspicion, or probable cause, except when it is part of the description of a particular suspect" (1). There are many opposing views on racial profiling; some believe it to be a useful tool used by law enforcement, while others believe it to be another way to discriminate against minorities. This paper sets out to examine racial profiling from its origin to present day, taking a look into both sides of the racial profiling issue to find what if any laws are
Regardless of your occupation, employees have the right to privacy. Case 9.1: Unprofessional Conduct shows how Pettit privacy was violated. Pettit was a teacher of many years and never had a bad evaluation of her work. What she did outside of work was labeled unprofessional by the Board of Education and they chose to fire her because they believed she was unfit to teach. I disagree with them completely and they did violate her privacy.
The movie Office Space is based around an engineer named Peter Gibbons and his two software engineer friends that work at the same company as him. In the Intech office where they work, the depressed Peter despises his job and his work life, as well as his abusive and unfair boss, Bill Lumbergh whom has just hired two consultants to basically downsize the company. This is not good news for Peter and his coworkers, as their jobs are at risk, which upsets them all even more than they were before, adding more stress that is unnecessary at this point in their lives. His best friends, the software engineers Michael Bolton and Samir Nagheenanajar that also hate Intech, are just as stressed and down about their job as Peter. Peter not only has issues
1. Ethics is a topic that sparks a lot of debate amongst different groups of people; it is hard to keep everyone in an organization happy. Research one ethical issue that is prevalent in the workplace and decide, as a leader, how you would handle it. Use Exercise 7-3 “Organizational Ethics” to aid you in your answer.
Personal values may conflict with ethical decision making if those personal values are different than the organizational norms of the business or institution. Constructing, and maintaining personal ethics in the workplace rests with the individual, and how willing he or she is in assimilating to the evolving cultural dynamic of the corporate world. Many times a person find their personal, cultural and/or organizational ethics conflicting and must reconcile a course of action that will mitigate cognitive dissonance. In order to be a productive member of society, in small groups and globally, one must reconcile these conflicts on a daily basis and continually move forward while maintaining personal integrity and
