Professional Standards and Workplace Expectations
After completing the chapter reading at Bethel University, the adult student asked herself the questions, “Should the company be allowed to ask such questions in a workplace?” Employers often use tests and other selection procedures to screen applicants for hire and employees for promotion. Bethel, (2011), There are many different types of tests and selection procedures, including cognitive tests, personality tests, medical examinations, credit checks, and criminal background checks. The use of aptitude tests in employment situations is the subject of much controversy in the area of fair employment law. (p. 186). However, successful job performance depends upon an array of factors including, first and foremost, a clear and full understanding of and commitment to workplace expectations and guidelines. Likewise, Ethical behavior on the part of the company and the employees of a small business can translate into honest and valued relationships with both customers and business partners. Maintaining ethical standards in the workplace involves setting expectations, providing guidance along the way and consistently choosing to do the right thing.

Ethical standards guide individuals and the company to act in an honest and trustworthy manner in all interactions. These standards should encourage employees to make the right decisions for the company, not the individual, and give them the courage to come forward

Self expression is one of the countries founding principles as set forth in the Constitution of the United States. Amendment One of the Constitution states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." I believe in the given situation that the most obvious solution is to publish it with both names, the fired colleague and myself, because being fired from a job for being honest and respectful to coworkers reflects well on you, and poorly on your boss. If, however, he does decide to fire you, it would be easy to explain to future employers the cause of your termination, and would hopefully to other companies, to prove you are a respectful and honest employee. Morals, Ethics and Law in a Code of Ethics A code of ethics that may be also called an ethical code or a code of conduct is an inherent element of the company culture. The membership in the company commits members to comply with the standards of the code of ethics and the rules and procedures used to enforce them. Thus, a well-structured and planned ethical code establishes trust and honesty, guides a decision-making process and advises employees’ commitment to the code. It might not be argued that every code of ethics is unique and reflects the spirit, values and business style of the company.
