Introduction: Ethics is the moral principles that govern a person’s behavior. Ethics is used in our everyday lives, it helps us decide how to react to situations that present themselves, from personal to professional. Within a business there are ethics that dictate how a business is to be run, it is written in a document called a code of conduct. Companies incur problems writing an effective code of conduct and then implementing this document into their company’s everyday work. In a study done by the Council of Ethical Organizations, researchers found that, “In only 8 percent of the companies did employees view their companies’ standards as “straightforward, informative, and even-handed.” (Lunday, 2006). There is a gap in communication between upper management and employees, this gap needs to be addressed promptly. It does not take much calculating to figure out that one instance of serious misconduct can land a company on the front of the next morning 's newspaper and put corporate reputation in jeopardy. The purpose of our paper is to establish the importance of an implemented code of conduct and to clarify the inherent weaknesses of an improperly implemented one along with the advantages of a well implemented code in order to inform small businesses. Importance of a Code of Conduct The purpose of a code of conduct is to promote moral behavior, serve as a guideline for ethical decision making, and to act as a reference for ethical dilemmas within a workplace.
