Avery,
I agree that Ethnic Studies neither promotes or reverse racism. I also agree that it should be taught in college and high school. It would be convenient if the youth was informed about the backgrounds of an ethnicity group. I agree that SB 1070 sends a message that we are not the land of opportunity. If we have the police pulling us over and questioning our citizenship, then are we really free? This only causes problems for those who have every right to be here, because they followed the legal steps to become citizens (as you've stated). I believe, too, that is disrespectful that if a officer pulled you over, regardless of you being a safe driver, but because of the color of your skin. I also think that the effects of this bill would
When trying to understand the concept of color blindness we first need to understand what the term means. It is a set of beliefs in which white individuals judge non-white individuals as if they were treated equally ignoring past racism (Scott p. 77). Individuals who use color blindness do so through four central frames usually used together. The four frames are abstract liberalism, naturalization, cultural racism, and minimization of racism. To understand how the four frames are sometimes used together we need to understand their meaning.
Over the years, the face of racism has taken on many forms. In present day America, racism is a very taboo subject. It a common view that racism is not a big issue anymore, given the large strides that we, as a country have made towards equality. However, the inequalities that still exist between races point to a different situation. Instead of the blatantly discriminatory acts that our nation has witnessed in the past, modern racism practices are more covert and seemingly nonracial, making this kind of discrimination seem more acceptable and politically correct. The Civil Rights Movement forced society to implement a new, subtler way to perpetuate racial inequality. In Racism Without Racists, Bonilla-Silva describes the justification
I think you bring up a very important point, over whether racism (or other forms of discrimination) is innate or learned behavior. While I realize that this subject is controversial, I tend to agree with you that racism is in fact a behavior that is learned. I think the evidence that young children do not care about the race (or religion for that matter) of their playmates, or even their caregivers (such as teachers).
Racial Profiling is the use of race or ethnicity as grounds for suspect someone of having committed an offense. Racial profiling against Hispanics, when I mean Hispanics are people from North American, South American and Central Americans. An example of racial profiling against Hispanics is by; the color of our skin, which the majority skin toned (Color) is brown but not all of them, some may be different color and are Hispanics. Sadly, our identity is defined by the color of our skin and are targeted and threatened with deportation and thinking that we are all illegal immigrants and discriminating with hurtful words that express that we do not belong here in the United States, even though some were born in the United States and supposedly that we are taking everyone’s job, but it is usually people who think that and that say that, are the people who can get a job but do not want to or cannot get a job, so they just blame the Hispanics. We are the easy targeted race and stereotype about us, by only referring Hispanics as illegal immigrant which is not because there are other migrant who crossed the United States and are here illegally and Society does not refer them as illegal immigrants. Also it leads to being arrested unfairly for no reason, just because he or she was Hispanic. In Arizona which already have accepted racial profiling against Hispanics that has made the law passed which is called “SB1070”. Then there are people who racial
The next question is why is racial profiling is used in identifying illegal immigrants. As a matter fact, it is the most effective way to identify illegal immigrants. In 1954 US INS began “Operation Wetback, which was intended for to remove one million illegal immigrants from the southwestern U.S. through use of racial profiling, ending up removing near the one million illegal immigrants targeted.” (The Police Should...) With that said , “giving this criteria of power to the cops would definitely raise the percentage of illegal immigrants caught in the country, just for giving them the right to act when they feel they need to.” (The Police Should...) by the way the fact of a bill like that passing will deter them enough to send them back to their home country. By the way U.S. tax dollars are used to pay for public servants like police officers and border patrol.

Senate Bill 1070, also known as the “Support our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act”, is a piece of legislation that originated in early 2010 which gives the police the permission to check immigration status when enforcing other laws. The intentions of SB1070 is to cut down on the illegal immigrants in Arizona by having immigrants carry immigration papers, or will be held until proven their status in the USA. However, this senate bill has caused a lot of controversies on the issues on racial profiling and unconstitutional acts have put the federal law into question of their actions. The issues of SB1070 have also gained my interest into learning about the both sides of SB1070 and does it affect our views of the American government
The Arizona SB 1070 is a state immigration law that has raised racial and political controversy. The law has had a negative effect on the majority of the hispanic community in the state of Arizona. The law was put in place to eliminate the amount of illegal immigrants that cause crime yet has targeted those who are neither criminals nor illegal. The SB 1070 law is the perfect example of racial profiling, is unconstitutional, and does not actually solve illegal immigration, the law has more negative effects than positive and should be repealed.
It is a bill that promotes law enforcement to racially profile, encourages racism in this country. This bill was passed to help diminish the amount of undocumented citizens entering the state of Arizona. This bill is unnecessary to pass because even before this bill, Arizona was beginning to see a slow decline in the amount of undocumented immigrants trying to enter the state, even as a nation the numbers have slowly decreased within the last 3 years. S.B 1070 is, and will not be the solution to diminish the flow of undocumented citizens from entering the state. Arizona used S.B 1070 in order to exploit foreigners, and undocumented immigrants. The bill also violates American citizens constitutional rights which are not supposed to be taken This bill is harsh, and should be repealed because it hasn’t benefited the state of
The landlord-tenant relationship between Blacks and Jews is one that most people are familiar with when thinking about the two groups. In James Baldwin’s Negroes Are Anti-Semitic Because They’re Anti-White he opens the article saying “When we were growing up in Harlem our demoralizing series of landlords were Jewish, and we hated them. We hated them because they were terrible landlords, and did not take care of the building.” This statement itself clearly shows the relationship between Blacks and Jews during the time he was growing up in New York. He further states “Furthermore, the Jew can be proud of his suffering, or at least not ashamed of it. His history and his suffering do not begin in America, where black men have been
For the second time in only a few weeks, the Arizona state legislature has made the local news for its stance on ethnic issues with the introduction of Arizona House Bill (HB) 2021. Proponents of the bill believe that it is necessary to maintain ethnic equality in our classrooms. However, House bill HB 2120, which would prohibit ethnic-focused studies, should not be passed because it would restrict our history, it is unconstitutional, and it would be harmful to our schools and students. Passage of this bill would do more harm than good in our local community.
Hello, welcome to your new high school! I am here today to inform you guys about our schools racism problem. I must profess that there is a lot of racism at our school. To say that we have no racism would be a statement of pure gibberish. It will not be a easy task to annihilate racism. I know that there is a great disparity between where we are today and where we want to be by the end of the year, in regards to racism. We are confident, that with your help we can come to a amicable solution to end racism sooner than later!
To understand whether or not racism is learnt, we first have to divulge into the nature of racism. It is usually assumed that racism has been a part of civilisation since civilisation started, that it is embedded into how people work and that no matter what, it will always exist. Another assumption is that racism derives from the capitalism of the slave trade by white elitist men seeking to dehumanize people for economic gain, and used racism as a way to mask their financial motives to justify enslavement as righteous. After anti-slavery movements began to happen, the capitalist motives behind slavery “took on a new form as the justification of the ideology of imperialism” [4].
Racism and the effects of racism can be seen anywhere. In the hallways of the high school, the streets, housing, neighborhoods, cities, and more, one thing is seen, and that 's segregation, which is ultimately caused by racism. Walking in the hallways at school, chances are that you’ll see a group of whites, a group of Hispanics, and a group of African Americans, but rarely do you see these three groups interacting with each other. Racism has been made a part of people’s everyday lives, a border posed by racism: segregation. Racism and its effects can not only be seen around us but can also be traced throughout countless readings in HWOC this year. Almost every literary work focuses on the topic or underscores at its effects, and today, you can walk into any library or bookstore and find something, whether it be a news article or chapter book, regarding racial conflict. This alone is evidence of how racism has integrated our society and continues to inform and manipulate our minds. The literature we have been exposed to this past year is a reflection of society, similar to a reflection in a mirror showing us the piece of hair sticking up in the back, literature is showing us the problem so it can be addressed.
Institutional Racism in the education system can be combated by teachers and administration working together. Schools must take the initiative of incorporating different cultural perspectives in the curriculum. Only addressing the basic characteristics of culture such as dance, food, and religion is not enough. Racism affects people on many levels, and it's essential to acknowledge the history and culture of a society in all aspects. Cultural characteristics influenced by the political, social, and economic climate. To have an accurate grasp of the values that shaped the culture one must break down and analyze the bias and discrimination of the society.
