This paper analyzes the types, forms, and effectiveness of the author's use of pathos to evoke emotion from their audience to persuade them to support the purpose of their message. Defined in the course pack as "using emotion to persuade" (Heasley et al. 128) pathos is a technique rhetorists use to garner an emotion response from their audience through one of four methods. These five methods are word choice, vivid examples, personal experience, scare tactics and sensory details; authors can employ these methods individually or in conjunction with one another to invoke a pathetic response from their audience.

Immigration is a complex and multifaceted issue that faces the US. In his film, Sin Nombre (2009), director Cary Fukunaga aims to juxtaposition the issue of immigration with the issue of gang violence in Mexico, and show the difficulties immigrants face by giving his audience an insider’s perspective into the experience of immigrating to the United States from Honduras. He does this through a variety of characters; most notably Willie and Sayra. Fukunaga did extensive research on life in the Mara Salvatrucha gang and the process of immigrating to America, in order to make his film realistic and authentic. The result is a movie that not only shows immigration in a way that evokes empathy and enforces the humanity of immigrants in the viewer’s mind, but also gives the viewer a look into the realities of being in a gang. Through the use of strong characters, powerful dialogue and vivid imagery, Fukunaga uses pathos to put a human face to the issue of immigration, logos to inform and give his audience context about the issues the film addresses, and ethos to establish his credibility and make the film believable.

In Neil Postman’s novel, Amusing Ourselves to Death, he argues that rationality in America has become dictated by television. Through the use of ethos, pathos, and logos, Postman demonstrates that his claim is valid and reliable. A main focus of this semester was learning our audience, and convincing people of things through writing and or visuals using ethos pathos and or logos. I did not see the connections of any of my papers from the first to second semester at first. But my memoir from the first semester and my campaign project from this semester both use pathos, emotion. For me it was easiest to write about the pathos, but the ethos and logos part was out of my reach. Ethos, pathos, and logos are all devices that Barbara Ehrenreich effectively uses throughout her novel Nickel and Dimed to prove that America needs to address the commonly overlooked issue of poverty within every community. With the use of various techniques and phrasing, they favorably present their product and provide evidence to convince a customer to buy their lotion. They use ethos by featuring the widely known actress, Jennifer Aniston. They extend their credibility by writing on the label,“dermatologist recommendations” and being a famously known, well-working brand. Doctor Martin Luther King Junior was an expert in persuading his audience. He was a massive advocate for the civil rights movement, and when he saw the injustice being served to the African American community during the Vietnam war, he had to take a stand. In his passage, "Beyond Vietnam- A time to break silence", he uses the rhetorical devices of logos, pathos and ethos to to strengthen his argument for why American involvement in the Vietnam war was unjust. While the music is very important to setting the tone of the video, the actors and the dogs played a very important role also. You saw both the boy and dog grow up and mature. The director used pathos to bring out the emotions of the viewers. This idea of using pathos helps the commercial get its point across because IAMS dog food is suppose to help your dog live a long, happy and healthy life. Throughout the commercial, you see the boy and his dogs journey from childhood and puppyhood to adulthood. Even though the dog food makes the dog happy and live a better life, that influences how he treats the boy as well. As a young boy, whenever they would play together or if the boy was sad, the dog would lick the boys face and always cheer him up.

This article shows great details of how bad writing can be fixed. The article begins by showing logos of what high school and college students are struggling with the most. The reason is that it states key examples of what the students at New Dorp high school aren’t good at. The article shows a lot of opinion from teachers by telling their ways of fixing the students. It is also repetitive by saying that the main reason the kids are not good writers is because they are lazy. In certain ways, this article is using pathos by the teachers. I do think the writer could have used more proven facts.
