How often do we use social media? Teenagers spend at least nine hours a day on social networking sites. That’s thirty percent of all time spent online dedicated to social media. These numbers are constantly increasing every day. Many of the tweets and posts that we see on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter use arguments and we don’t even realize it. All of these arguments use ethos, pathos, and logos to make a point. Let’s examine how these three concepts are used on social media. Ethos appeals to ethics, and it’s a way of convincing someone about the credibility of the persuader. Whatever you read, whether it’s a news article, commercial, or a post on Instagram, you are evaluating the message for a sense of the character and the credibility of the sender. Our culture teaches us to be doubtful of these messages. Because of this, people strive to influence our opinions by building up their credibility. One way ethos is used in social media is all of the tweets about the new iphone. Most people are tweeting that the new iphone is acting up, and it’s too high in price. How do we know that they’ve even tried the new phone? Is this someone you can trust? The more people that tweet about the phone, the more likely you are to believe that the phone really is acting up.
