2.) While reading the article the author did a great job convincing the writing piece. The author uses lines with logos to use to back his statements up. “In 1927, a school teacher in Secaucus, N.J, and named Helen Clark lost her teaching License. The reason? Somebody has seen her smoking cigarettes after school hours” (Zimmerman). The quote meant a lot to me because it kind of give me an emotional pull but strong point with using logos.

All the videos present logos, ethos, and pathos. Some may show it more than other videos, the best video that shows all 3 of this rhetoric is the first video. In the first video Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks were talking about how amazing Claudette was for standing up for herself. In addition, some of the ways they show everything that is happening is by logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos is shown when the NAACP were trying to find out who can be the representative of the group and how they can stand up to what happened when Claudette was seating in the white section of the bus and did not move.
In Neil Postman’s novel, Amusing Ourselves to Death, he argues that rationality in America has become dictated by television. Through the use of ethos, pathos, and logos, Postman demonstrates that his claim is valid and reliable. As Meredith Grey, my fictional idol from Grey’s anatomy would say, “Progress looks like a bunch of failures”. A main focus of this semester was learning our audience, and convincing people of things through writing and or visuals using ethos pathos and or logos. I did not see the connections of any of my papers from the first to second semester at first. But my memoir from the first semester and my campaign project from this semester both use pathos, emotion. For me it was easiest to write about the pathos, but the ethos and logos part was out of my reach. I left some of my comfort writing the campaign paper using all 3 and it gave me a better understanding as a writer to keep in mind who am I talking to, what message am I trying to get across
Ethos, pathos, and logos are all devices that Barbara Ehrenreich effectively uses throughout her novel Nickel and Dimed to prove that America needs to address the commonly overlooked issue of poverty within every community. It is important that she uses all three devices because they help support her argument by increasing her credibility, connecting to the readers’ emotions, and appealing to their sense of logic. The combination of these devices puts a sense of urgency on the problem Ehrenreich is addressing and therefore creates an effective argument.
Alone, the use of only ethos, pathos, or logos would make for a semi-interesting story, but together, they tell a believable account of real events. Beatty makes use of all three techniques to connect with her audience and share her own story as well as hard facts that verify the events. The powerful combination of ethos, pathos, and logos conveys Beatty’s story convincingly.
While the music is very important to setting the tone of the video, the actors and the dogs played a very important role also. You saw both the boy and dog grow up and mature. The director used pathos to bring out the emotions of the viewers. This idea of using pathos helps the commercial get its point across because IAMS dog food is suppose to help your dog live a long, happy and healthy life. Throughout the commercial, you see the boy and his dogs journey from childhood and puppyhood to adulthood. Even though the dog food makes the dog happy and live a better life, that influences how he treats the boy as well. As a young boy, whenever they would play together or if the boy was sad, the dog would lick the boys face and always cheer him up.
This cartoon appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos in a variety of ways. Ethos is "what modern students of communication refer to as credibility" (Lucas 353). Ethos is shown by the figures at the bottom stating that they held her seat open since 1955 to mark the year she stood up for her rights. Pathos is depicted through the pride illustrated in the cartoon. For example, it shows Rosa Parks entering heaven as angels say "we have something in the front row for you..." because she fought for her spot on the bus and changed the way of life for future African Americans. In this excerpt which states Max’s appeal to get Bigger, who is a black man, a sentence of not guilty during the racist 1940’s, Max uses the three rhetorical appeals and imagery to convey his message. Max’s target audience for this speech is the court and judge, which he first addresses in an apologetic tone, but later shifts to a more authoritative manner of speaking. Throughout Max’s speech, he use effective appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos. In paragraph four, he mentions “The Loeb and Leopold case.”
Normally an author uses pathos to gain sympathy from readers by using emotions. The first example of pathos is when she made the statement “ If you are black and male and you do not play sports — well, good luck gaining admission to schools like UNC (Jackson).” In my opinion, this is a strong statement that is hard to read and makes me feel discouraged. The reason she said this was to show her point that they are extremely picky about who plays on these high revenue teams. These schools are only looking for the students who will bring in money for the school and that is why the author is trying to show that they get treated with priority. This article shows great details of how bad writing can be fixed. The article begins by showing logos of what high school and college students are struggling with the most. The reason is that it states key examples of what the students at New Dorp high school aren’t good at. The article shows a lot of opinion from teachers by telling their ways of fixing the students. It is also repetitive by saying that the main reason the kids are not good writers is because they are lazy. In certain ways, this article is using pathos by the teachers. I do think the writer could have used more proven facts.
As I began to read this article I noticed that logos was definitely used as one of the rhetorical appeals. The author attempts to persuade his audience by making a claim and providing some type of proof after each claim. For example, “Papa John’s says it has been pulling advertising associated with the NFL. The league, it says, has given some feature spots in return.” This quote was provided after the author mentions how, “Papa John’s is no longer going to advertise with the NFL.” The first example of how he makes a logical appeal. The media at the time of 9/11 swamped the masses and portrayed ethos, persuading the viewers of an American unity, that could not be crushed, no matter how evil the attack.

The bullying issue is one that should not be ignored. It is a serious issue, but using satire, it is easy to bring it up lightly, without crossing the imaginary boundary line. Throughout my essay, I used satirical devices such as pathos, tone and exaggeration. Pathos can be expressed by giving examples that the reader can relate to. “I’m sure that many can relate to that very upsetting feeling when one receives a test grade that did not reach expectations” is one example of how I embedded pathos into my essay.
