Gaining complete dominance within a society can be viewed as a lion taking control over its land. These lions can be regarded as a powerful empire, as they live among other preys fighting for supremacy. In History it has been said that “A nation that did not expand would not survive” (American Passages, 529). Imperialism is a prime example of a group of prey fighting for sovereignty, within this land we come across the lions, otherwise known as the nations who control the prey and victimize them to gain complete dominance. Nations such as Japan, United Kingdome, United States, Germany and France were all living amongst themselves in this word fighting for the ultimate position in the game of imperialism. These leading nations took it upon themselves to find undeveloped nations and control certain aspects; they managed to do this because of their strong military base, as well as a stable economy. Although imperialism has been viewed in a negative way, many have seen positives aspects emerging from colonization. These include building roadways, canals and even railways for the underdeveloped nations; other examples include giving them an education system, and stabilizing their economy. That being said, the negative elements outgain the positive, these mother nations took advantage of their daughter nations, causing them to work for cheap labor and neglecting their natural born rights. American Imperialism, if discounting the conquering of Native populations and forced assimilation with Indian Wars, began with the Mexican – American War in 1846 which led to the annexation of several hundred thousand square miles of Mexican lands. While the causes of the Mexican – American War was mainly about economics and manifest destiny, race still played a major role in the war’s end in that while 525,000 sq. miles of new land was acquired, once again it was not for all Americans. White Americans were the only ones who were encouraged to move west in order to move west in order to populate the newly acquired lands with Americans. Imperialism was reborn in the West with the emergence of the modern nation-state and the age of exploration and discovery. It is to this modern type of empire building that the term imperialism is quite often restricted. The term that suck towards me has been, Imperialism. Imperialism is link to possibly every theory and example that might be given by ones professor. The term imperialism is used to describe the past expansion of power by a nation, such the British Empire, Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union and the Great Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere by the Japanese, the term is also used to describe ongoing tension between nations or the cause of said tension.

One of the main focus points in European colonization was to further their economic order by using abundant recourses that were found far from the home land. They looked to gain power and produce wealth. In order to reach these goals, Europeans directed cultural change among the indigenous people and justified their actions by claiming it was “God’s work”. However, with all of these changes came diverse reactions from the native people. If it were true that all states are merely defending themselves, then they would be able to leave each other alone. The rights which one state ascribes to itself against another state are defended. This is an important point: the interests that states have in each other brings the states into conflict with each other not the desire to be left alone. So one has to explain how a conflict exists in ordinary buying and selling, and it is insufficient to explain the conflict between states by resorting to images from the past.
