However, once what is now known as the United States was founded, there were more opportunities for a variety of things, including slave labor, colonization, entrepreneurship, and even an escape from religious persecution and the social and political system of Europe. Chivalry (chevalerie) is a French term that means “Skills to handle a horse,” but after the first crusades chivalry became more of an honor code to an ideal knight. Sir Gawain and The Green Knight is not only an adventurous tale but is also a test for Gawain’s character and a test of his adherence to the knight’s code of chivalry. The Code of Chivalry includes qualities such as honor, love, and humility. In the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the author uses different types of symbolism to demonstrate the theme of the nature of chivalry.
