In my opinion, the benefits of the European exploration did not outweigh its consequences. One reason why the benefits did not outweigh the consequences is the Native American population. Another reason the benefits did not outweigh is because of the Columbian Exchange. Columbus also did not stand up to his promises. Those are some of the reasons why the benefits did not outweigh the consequences. The first reason why the benefits did not outweigh the consequences is the Native American population. The population decreased starting from 1500-1650. The population decreased because the European people killed them with smallpox. The population of the Native Americans helped the benefits not outweigh from its consequences. Another
Demographics are shown in documents 6, 11, 12, and 13. First, in document 6, the topic of domestication between plants and animals arose. The author argues that the density of human population document determined the amount of domestication occurring. This resulted in a various amount of food surpluses. The surplus of food would result in an increase of population in different areas. In the document, the author argues that more advanced societies in better geographic locations benefited from the domestication of plants and animals. Since larger and more developed regions benefited, they had a higher change of growing their population and increasing their surplus due to their luck of domestication. Document 11 discussed the decrease in human population due to natural causes, such as drought, famine, and disease. This decrease in population was directly connected to the colonial world. The expansion of the colonies was the gateway to spreading natural disaster and epidemic disease. Lastly, in Document 13 expresses concern about the smallpox epidemic that occurred among the native Indians in Peru. The Indians faced many plagues once the European conquered their land. These sicknesses wiped out nearly half of the native population in Peru. From the point of view from the author, the expansion of the west ultimately benefited the modern world, but it came with harsh consequences. When the Europeans
The Age of Exploration had many effects on the Natives. Many people were dying of diseases. Some of these Europeans killed & tortured people. European explorers also helped the Indians to read and write. They also began the Columbian Exchange. The European explorers, conquistadors, and settlers from the Age of Exploration should be epitomized as villains and heroes.
The Columbian Exchange that occurred in the Western Hemisphere subjected America to extensive changes that would fundamentally change the people that lived there, the people that would come to live there, and the land itself. In fact, the America that we know today has been shaped by the events that took place hundreds of years ago during the Columbian Exchange. As European people brought their culture and values to the Americas, it started to combine and mix with the cultures and values already established there, changing both Europeans and Indians in admittedly small, but significant ways. While this can be considered a positive point of the Columbian Exchange, in its entirety, the Columbian Exchange could be considered a disaster, especially for the natives that lived in America before the Europeans came to claim it. Not only did Indians suffer at the hands of European diseases that we completely foreign to them, killing off millions and changing the Indian demographic forever, but the world that they grew to be so familiar with changed around them.
This was a negative effect for the native people because there was a lot of poverty and the British decided to take over land that was in use already. Many people wouldn't have anywhere to live but still ended up getting kicked out of their own place. Some people would argue the effects of imperialism in Africa and Asia were positive economically.
The European Exploration was a time where Europeans explored new places, bringing new ideas to Europe. These explorations were a major factor in taking Europe from a “Dark Age” to a Renaissance. There are many causes that led to these great accomplishments, and the Renaissance.
Lastly, the Columbian Exchange hindered the development of society in the Americas is because of the taxes. The taxes in the forms of lands and goods enforced on the natives. The Indians were actually really under pressure that when they had no goods, they had to sell their children to the Spaniards and eventually turned out to selling themselves (The Ten Plagues).
The consequences of European contact with the Native Americans had grave consequences surpassing the expectations of both sides. However, while the Europeans were able to overcome most of the initial problems surrounding the contact, the Native Americans endured the effects for much longer which led to the decline of Native American power in North America. Both biological effects such as the impact of diseases, and cultural effects including the formation of new societies and the European influence, had devastating effects on the lives the Native Americans had formerly known. While some of the effects of contact could be seen as positive, overall the negative effects from Native American contact with the Europeans proved to outweigh the
European Exploration is negative due to the effects that individual explorers and triangular trade still has on my life. Racism and the endangerment of native people are prime examples of the negative consequences of European Exploration.
*The inclusion of the New World in the Age of Exploration brought benefit to the europeans and spaniards in the form of goods, land, and trade, but brought damaging effects to the Native Americans and African slaves.
A positive humanitarian effect of westward expansion is that it increased a sense of patriotism. Although the treatment of the Native Americans was indeed in humane but during the times, the thought process was different. Many people agreed that Manifest destiny was justified because of the growing population and also it was a god given right. In addition, the white settler believed that it was their duty to help the Native Americans. This brought people together to set out on missions to do what they believe what they think is right. On the contrary, seeing the inhumane treatment of the Native Americans allowed more people to speak up and take a stand. The wars between the Native Americans and settlers could have potentially showed the any side the repercussions of violence bringing people together to find more convenient solutions. The idea of Manifest Destiny and movement of Westward expansion hit the Native American hard. As the movement westward increased, the discovery of gold on native American lands resulted in the
By doing this there was devastation that affected the Native Americans population, which resulted in the European diseases. Because of this there was a scientific and industrial progress advantages that Europeans obtain once they arrived.
Throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, European exploration and expansion thrived. Portugal led the way in this movement of exploration with their development of efficiently built ships known as caravels, seafaring devices such as compasses and astrolabes, and cutting-edge naval academies. Various European countries, including Spain, England, France, etc., followed Portugal’s example by utilizing their progressive naval technology. These technological advancements led to the crossing of oceans and eventually the circumnavigation of the world. These Portuguese sailing techniques were implemented by explorers such as Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Hernando Cortes, Francisco Pizarro, and Bernal Castillo allowing them to travel by sea to places such as Africa, East Asia, the Caribbean, and the Americas. These nations and explorers were persuaded to put in the time and effort to complete these complex expeditions by three essential motivations. Financial gain, political dignity, and religious expansion were fundamental motivators for the European Age of Exploration.
In this find, he gained money, people, land, and respect from the other countries. One of the big things that Columbus got out of this voyage was resources.
The European economic motivation was the main cause of European exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries. New trade, and the search for gold and spices were the three main motives behind Europe’s thirst for exploration and discovery. Trade with Asia and Africa was shrinking, Europe’s gold supply was drained, and spices were growing in demand, forcing Europe to send explorers in search of new resources and trade.
Whenever you hear about the European Exploration, or ‘The Age of Discovery’’ you hear a lot about what the Europeans gained from it, while they did learn a lot from this and gather a lot of new resources they were not the only ones affected. The Age of Discovery affected more areas that just Europe, it also affected the Americas and Africa. To prove this we must first know what European Exploration is.
