The first character that exemplifies loneliness is Crooks. Crooks was always lonely because of his race. Crooks never had a black friend growing up which was no different from the ranch. He stated, “There wasn’t another colored family for miles...now there ain’t a colored man on this ranch.” Crooks felt like all white people didn't want to be around black people which made him isolate himself. He also felt isolated because he was not permitted in the bunkhouse like the other men. Since the guys wouldn’t let him in their area, he felt no one belonged in his, making him isolate himself from everyone else. “They play cards in there, but I can’t play because i'm black. They say I stink. Well,I tell you, all of you stink to me” (75). He also stated, “I tell ya a guy gets too lonely” . This shows you he actually get lonely.
“Actually, feeling lonely has little to do with how many friends you have. It 's the way you feel inside. Some people who feel lonely may rarely interact with people and others who are surrounded by people but don 't feel connected” (Karyn Hall 2013). Truthfully, loneliness is something almost all people fear. It 's a deeper feeling then just being isolated. It 's feeling distant or disconnected from others. Loneliness is so much more than just feeling secluded, it 's feeling rejected by society, or even like an outcast. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck suggests that there is a deeper meaning to being lonely than just the superficial sense of
Not everyone has a place to call home, where they can feel safe. At the start of the story of "Fly Away, Home" we just see the how terrible and scary Andrew's life is. Andrew is very Pessimistic because he doesn't have a place to call home. In the story, Fly Away Home, Andrew said: "That's because we don't have a home and the

Loneliness is the sadness resulting from being isolated or abandoned. Being lonely is almost always directly connected to relations between people, or the lack there of. Mother Teresa once said “Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.” In John Steinbecks classic novel, Of Mice And Men, the three characters, Crooks, Curley’s wife and Candy struggle with loneliness in different forms because of characteristics that they can’t control. All three characters deal with their loneliness by searching for companionship with others on the ranch and this works out differently for each of them.
In the novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses characterization of dialogue and actions to reveal that one can be surrounded by a group and still be lonely. The use of dialogue proves that the characters are lonely even though they are working closely together. Also, through the characterization of actions the author reveals that most of the men are lonely and that the men occupy themselves even though they are with a group of people. John Steinbeck’s theme applies to the entire would because it proves that loneliness affects everyone at one time or another. It changes the way a person thinks and behaves. When people feel lonely their actions and way of life are affected. Nobody can run away from loneliness even if they live with a group of people. It’s a trait that no one can get rid
Loneliness and exclusion from society hurts and affects everyone; the emotional strain a person endures from it creates the image they present to others, but deep down they are not the display image they manufacture. As an illustration, while opening up to Lennie in the barn Curley’s wife states, “I get lonely… You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad.
A high school girl carried her feet along into the cafeteria, half past noon. Blue denim jeans and a chunky sweater is her outfit. She finds the nearest empty table, which happens to be in the corner, takes out her lunch and starts munching along. Not much expression is found on her face. A blank stare the whole forty minute lunch. It looks like she doesn’t have many people to talk to. This girl must be lonely. She is not the only person who experiences loneliness. Being lonely is extremely common. Loneliness is a major theme throughout the story, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck. In the 1930s, Steinbeck powerfully portrays many characters to be lonely, which causes people to have depression and anger.
In John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, he illustrates the journey George and Lennie have throughout a significant part of their lifetime. Throughout the novel, many characters, including George and Lennie, are facing lonesome and they struggle to deal with it the right way. Most of the men are all alone because they have no family left or they isolate themselves from their peers. Loneliness touches each character at some point in the novel and it really emphasizes the impact it can have on an individual. Steinbeck uses the characters Curley’s wife, Crooks, and Candy to develop the theme that containing loneliness will make someone’s desperation deepen.
I don’t think I’ve ever felt thin lonely before, living in a small town like Attadale your either popular or lonely. As I was busy pondering my misfortune, my dad snuck into the room and was watching me.
Isolation and loneliness can plague even those who socialize with others the most. Although all the main characters in this novel live in such close quarters, and socialize with each other on a daily basis, they are still isolated in their own ways. There are many factors that can lead to loneliness, such as race, intelligence and general appearance. The constant fear of being lonely, can also lead a person to be even more isolated. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, isolation and loneliness are evident through several key characters; Crooks, George, and Candy.
Another character that is very lonely is Candy. Candy is the oldest mentioned worker in the story. He has worked on ranches for many years of his life, and along the way, he even lost one of his hands. Candy had an old farm dog that was just like a best friend to him at the beginning of the story. Since the dog was having trouble getting around and smelled nasty, Carlson(Another worker on the ranch) convinced Candy to let him shoot the dog. This made Candy terribly sad, lonely and scared. He was scared that since he was old and wouldn't be able to work eventually that the men would do the same thing to him. That isn't how he wanted to go; Candy wanted to be able to go peacefully. He wanted to be in his own place and not have someone bossing him
Tom Guthrie and his two boys, Ike and Bobby, began the theme of loneliness right from the start when their mother was so depressed and wouldn’t come out of her room. The boys would go to check on her everyday and try to get her to come down stairs even to join the family for dinner but she wouldn’t get out of bed. But the reason Ella, their mother, wouldn’t leave her room because she was in such a state of depression and felt as if she was all alone. Eventually she realized there was nothing her boys could do to make her feel any better so she decided that moving out of the house would be best for all of them. But when she did this they boys felt as if they no longer had a mother, and Tom was left to raising their children all by himself. This sense of loneliness put a strain on everyone in the family; Ike and Bobby continuously asked Tom if their mother was every going to return home. Their father
Loneliness is a feeling that everyone will experience at some point in their life. Loneliness can be felt even when you’re in a room full of people. In “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” the characters, including Charlie, are no exception to this feeling of being lonely. Teenagers are probably the age group that has this feeling the most. This a time in life that you are changing, the people around you are changing, and you’re finally growing up and maturing and each person handles these changes differently. We each will feel this as some point as we grow and realize that the things and the people that we have grown accustomed to won’t be there anymore because it’s time for us to experience new things in life.
Many of the characters do suffer from loneliness in the novel Of Mice and Men. George lets everybody know early on in the novel that he is lonely. When George reminds Lennie that "Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world” (Steinbeck Section 1). Men like George who travel from farm to farm usually never have anyone to look to for companionship and protection. As the story goes on, Candy, Crooks, and Curley’s wife all state their deep loneliness. Crooks says, “A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don't make no difference who the guy is, long's he's with you. I tell ya, I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an' he gets sick" (80). In a world with no friends to confide in, random people will have to do. Each of the characters search for a friend, someone to confide in and be able to talk to on an everyday basis, as Crooks says. In the end, however, companionship of Curley’s kind seems impossible to find. For George, when Lennie dies, George’s dreams and hopes of finding a companion disappears.
