“Every child deserves a champion-an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.” -Rita Pierson (Rita). This quote is so inspiring to me because it implies that children deserve someone that will cheer them on and always be there to help them (Rita). Being a teacher is so much more than pumping knowledge into a child’s brain and this quote explains that perfectly. Teaching involves caring and compassion. To some children, teachers are the only role model in their lives so it is important to always be kind and understanding. There is no way education will ever be perfect, but it has come a long way and keeps improving. One thing that deeply impresses me about education is far it has come with inclusion throughout the years. In 1973 the “Rehabilitation Act” required all schools to provide accommodations in schools including participations in programs and access to buildings. This was the first act to start gearing special education in the right direction (American). Children with special needs can now be included in a general education classroom. There are so many significant benefits from this that shows education is moving in the right direction. Students that are in the general education classroom can familiarize themselves with children with disabilities. They are exposed to a more diverse environment and learn more about disabilities. This has the potential to make students more confident and respectful in social situations if they’ve not ever spoken with a child with disabilities. Children with disabilities benefit from this because they aren’t secluded from their peers and can feel welcome and normal, which is very important when trying to help a student build a strong sense of self efficacy. A disability should never make a student feel unwanted or different, and with inclusion all students can benefit. All students should be involved with all classes, activities, and lesson plans.
