In this image (figure 2) pathos is the main element that have been used in order to make the image more effective and successful. The emphasis of pathos in this image is in the color and the situation that every side has. The image shows a representation of unhealthy and healthy, contaminated and purity, ultimately life and death. When the audiences see the right side with all this healthy, purity and bright environment they will feel good and exultant because the colors make the psychological comfort. While when they see the other side with the unhealthy, contaminated trees with out leaves it makes them feel bad and scared from losing the environment. Therefore, by these influencing, the audience will realize that they really have to stop
All the videos present logos, ethos, and pathos. Some may show it more than other videos, the best video that shows all 3 of this rhetoric is the first video. In the first video Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks were talking about how amazing Claudette was for standing up for herself. In addition, some of the ways they show everything that is happening is by logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos is shown when the NAACP were trying to find out who can be the representative of the group and how they can stand up to what happened when Claudette was seating in the white section of the bus and did not move.
The appeal to logos, ethos, and pathos are used everyday in many instances. A commercial is just one instance, and Gatorade commercials use them very well. The specific Gatorade commercial I chose to use was the one where Kevin Durant has a nightmare about being blocked by Dwyane Wade that aired in 2013. Kevin Durant doesn’t want that dream to come true so he practices very hard all while using Gatorade products. Meanwhile Dwyane Wade has a nightmare that he gets dunked on by KD, so he decides to use Gatorade products while he practices. The commercial is essentially saying that if you use Gatorade products that you will achieve your goals easier, and be more like the great NBA players that use the products as well.
In accounts of true crime seen today, rhetoric is often used to impact readers and how they receive the information presented in the article or given argument. The use of rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos, and logos ensures that the information appeals to not only one area of communication, and effectively gets across to the intended audience.
Pathos/ethos/logos A lot of pathos were used a lot by Donald trump in the debate. For example, trump was trying to persuade to the people that the stop and frisk law would work. He was coming off in the debate, like that would be the only thing that stops the crime in the inner cities. Hillary was also trying to convince to the crowd how trump was a racist (which is true) and how he disrespects women. Donald trump also began interrupting Hillary while she was talking in her debate, when he felt she was saying something that got to him.
In today’s world, our lives are covered in the sense of credibility, emotional appeal, and logical appeal. These three modes of persuasion are used to achieve the audiences’ attention and influence them towards an idea. The three modes are called ethos, pathos, and logos. An example of a famous speech that used these three modes and more would be Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address which was addressed in November 19, 1863. In his speech, Lincoln’s audience was the Union, Lincoln supporters, and the deceased among the Union. The address claim that America, which our founding fathers united, is sustaining many issues that have been affecting the stability of this nation. Travis Waldron’s article titled “Native American Group: Fight Against ‘Redskins’ About More Than Just The Name” explains to the readers how the term “Redskin” effects Native Americans across the nation. The style of anything written largely determines how your readers will interpret what you said. Waldron effectively uses both diction and tone as well as ethos, pathos, and logos to enhance his content. The article does an incredible job of convincing its readers to think the way Waldron wants the readers to think.
The rhetorical device that I thought was most effective was his use of Pathos. I believe his purpose for using this type of rhetoric is to reach the heart of those he was writing to in hopes of moving them so much so that they feel a, “call to action,” so to speak. While some may argue that Martin Luther King, Jr.’s(MLK) use of logos was most effective, I disagree because while it is possible to persuade someone with logic, wouldn’t you feel compelled to act immediately if something moves your heart rather than waiting for your brain to convince your heart and then act. For example, in paragraph 7, it states, “We have waited for more than 340 years for our constitutional and God given rights.” as well as, “when you suddenly find your tongue
use of ethos, logos, and pathos bring hope and empathy to the American people. President Reagan presents himself as a truthful leader by noting that we are very open about the events that occur within our space program. Reagan wants to gain the trust of the people by letting them know he will be sure to communicate with them as events within the space program occur. In his speech, Reagan emphasizes to the people that, “We don’t keep secrets and cover things up. We do it all up front and in public” (6).
Normally an author uses pathos to gain sympathy from readers by using emotions. The first example of pathos is when she made the statement “ If you are black and male and you do not play sports — well, good luck gaining admission to schools like UNC (Jackson).” In my opinion, this is a strong statement that is hard to read and makes me feel discouraged. The reason she said this was to show her point that they are extremely picky about who plays on these high revenue teams. These schools are only looking for the students who will bring in money for the school and that is why the author is trying to show that they get treated with priority. As I began to read this article I noticed that logos was definitely used as one of the rhetorical appeals. The author attempts to persuade his audience by making a claim and providing some type of proof after each claim. For example, “Papa John’s says it has been pulling advertising associated with the NFL. The league, it says, has given some feature spots in return.” This quote was provided after the author mentions how, “Papa John’s is no longer going to advertise with the NFL.” The first example of how he makes a logical appeal. Media has an increasing part in public life, provoking emotions and swaying opinions. The power of the media is played out using language which is specially designed to persuade; But it is through rhetoric; ethos, pathos and logos (especially logos and ethos) that it tries to earn some credibility. Webster’s meaning for ‘Rhetoric’ is the art of speaking or writing effectively. Considering this, the tools of rhetoric- ethos, pathos and logos can be seen in the media coverage surrounding the events of 9/11, the Vietnam War and the Beaconsfield Mine disaster. The media at the time of 9/11 swamped the masses and portrayed ethos, persuading the viewers of an American unity, that could not be crushed, no matter how evil the attack.
Week 2, Discussion 1: Initial Post After considering the information in this week’s instructor guidance and readings, I understand ethos, pathos, and logos to be a way we communicate with others by appealing to them in different ways. For example in my research paper I am trying to persuade my audience into believing that that it is best for police officers and other law enforcement personal to wear body cameras at all times while assisting or responding to any type of call. For my specific argument I plan on using ethos by appealing to the credibility of my paper. I anticipate on using statistics and a thorough annotated bibliography to support my claim.
