Four years ago, I was eagerly listening to Alex McDaniel, an award-winning journalist share her personal insight into the profession at the University of Mississippi when it finally dawned on me: journalism is my calling. Later, I was watching Spotlight, a movie about the efforts of the Boston Globe in the early 2000's to showcase the Church’s acknowledgment and blunt protection of the abuse of children by local priests, when I truly understood the importance of journalism. To this day, Spotlight remains a reminder to always print the un-biased truth for the people, no matter the risks. I believe I deserve to be selected for one of the Education Foundation of Greenville’s scholarships because as a hard-working student I commit myself to effectively take advantage of the opportunity that the scholarships will provide me. Besides, I am a student that does not only persistently works hard academically, but …show more content…
My parents have taught my little sister and I to live to help others; a mentality I will take with me to Auburn University with the help of one of the Education Foundation of Greenville scholarships. I am a Hugh O’ Brian Youth Leadership Alumni, as well as a former Magnolia Girl’s State Delegate, a program that inspired me to pursue a career in communications. I have served as my classes’ secretary, treasurer, and current Vice President. I am Key Club’s Vice-President, having formerly served as Public Relations chair. I am especially involved in the Journalism program, having worked my way up from contributor, to staffer, to Co-Editor, to Editor-In-Chief, to being awarded Editor of the Year by the Mississippi Scholastic Press Association my senior year. I am captain of the dance team, having formerly been co-captain. I have been distinguished an All-American by the Universal Dance Association twice and have had the privilege to perform at Disney World, Jordan-Hare Stadium, and

I palpated the presumptuous malignant lump in my right upper abdominal area over, and over again. At the time I was ten years-old and thought that maybe I was delirious at one in the morning. The lump would not disappear. I palpated so often that the skin became tender with a single touch. I was terrified of a simple little lump in my body. A little lump that was capable of making an even larger impact on my life. It may seem rare that a ten year-old was constantly assessing their entire body for lumps, but it was a ritual for me every night before bed. At ten years-old I was fascinated with the quickly developing disease called cancer. Books and movies involving cancer fascinated me and was often my favorite to witness.
It is my honor to recommend Keely Stofer for a Hot Springs Rotary Club scholarship. I have known Keely for over five years since I began teaching in the Lake Hamilton School District in 2011. Two years later, as a ninth-grader, Keely was my top oral communications student and also competed in and won the Arkansas Optimist Oratorical Contest.
After a competitive brawl of a game with grass stains on my knees, jersey, and socks; with sweat drenching my hair and clothes, as if I just took a shower, I began to walk over to a table set up amongst the fans. They wait anxiously for my team to walk over after our big win. Each one of my teammates including myself are set at a table close to the bleachers, which set adjacent from the players bench across the pitch. I set down by my new set of teammates, as we got ready to sign posters for children with aspirations to play at collegiate level soccer one day, for parents and grand parents who couldn?t be more honored to be witnessing their little girls hard work finally paying off. It was recent that I experienced this
The countless hours spent going over flashcards for my SAT words, pouring over AP notes, taking extra swings in the cages, and the airplane rides back east flashed before my mind as the phone rang. It seemed like my whole future would be decided in this one moment. I was confident that I had done everything I possibly could, and it was daunting to know that now the decision was not under my control. I knew I had worked my butt off to try and get this spot on the Harvard softball team, my biggest goal. Hands and voice shaking, I took a deep breath and pressed “Answer.”
I’m Noah Myers, a 17 year old homeschool senior and Running Start student at FVCC. This quarter I’m starting my journey to manhood with 11 general credits. Though I’m not confident in my career direction yet, I am confident that God will reveal his plan for me as I pursue classes while trusting Him to lead me. Years ago God gave my mom a verse which crazily fits my personality. Joshua 1:9 ”Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” I used to be a big worrier, well, I still am sometimes but the more I get to know God, the more convinced I am that He knows best and loves me completely. It’s all about trusting Him to be Master because
Confronting academic subjects while attending multiple years of cross country, soccer, and track was the most significant challenge. Dealing with school projects after a physical workout was excruciating, but the idea of coming towards high school was to become the fastest runner at the field and track. I achieved my goal, impressing my coaches with speed and school records, and earned my varsity position in cross country. Looking at my older brothers in college, I realized that pushing myself academically could lead to the opportunity of studying at a prestigious university for my chosen field, so I spent all of my time focusing vastly on my courses inspired by my brothers that are already studying in the University of California systems.
Before I was born, my father had been looked up upon his family, he aimed to be the best so he decided to leave Pakistan and start a new life in America and bring his family along. Money was limited to him and for 10 years he had worked non-stop just to form a living and also to bring his brother to Texas. My dad would not stop hustling even after he was able to bring his brother to Texas both of them had worked till they were able to bring the whole family from Pakistan. The following years he was able to open his first dry cleaning business and even after he still had plans on opening extra businesses. I was born in 1997 and that same year he had closed his dry cleaning business to pursue his dream of being an international entrepreneur in the used clothing business.
July 22nd, 2008 is when my obsession started, it was my father's birthday, every year on his birthday, we make it into a huge party that year. There was a surprise that my mother put gathered she had two dancers, Darla and Darlene. Both came out with vibrant bright colors that would ____ . When the music started the skirt movement, the way it swirled, the way it waved at you. They danced 2 songs, but those two songs stunned me. That day on I knew I wanted to become a Folklorico dancer.
Every individual is brought fourth into this diverse world, declaring this place as his or her home. Each individual, however, inherits from this world his or her own personal being, upon which their experiences, families, beliefs and passions are collected and shaped into this unique individual. We are constantly exposed to our surroundings, which are composed of various elements that influence our actions and motives. Through the presence of my parents, I was able to inherit more that just the common traits, but rather a passion for being active and constantly engaged in physical activity. My dad, a former collegiate wrestler, has always posed as an exceptional example of what it represents to be an athlete. I would listen and observe as he recounts his wrestling career and how he utilizes his successes to prompt himself to exercise & maintain superb health. I was captivated by his well-being and strength in addition to his joy that he received through partaking in exercise.

Opening, option, lucky chance, possibility, regardless of the synonym used, opportunity is often overlooked. Who can lay blame? Life is busy. Adults have work, homes, children, volunteer activities to distract them. Students have school, practice, jobs. Daily obligations keep us from seeing opportunities or at least that is a convenient excuse. Don’t take chances, don’t call attention to yourself, keep your head down, the expected road is the safe road and consequently each day will securely turn into the next. That was my existence, one of the crowd, one of the many. Then I sorted socks.
Children have a tendency to bring out the very best in people. I can say I have been fortunate to have four little blessings of my own. I consider each of them as a blessing and each day I am reminded of how much they mean to me. My children have brought out the best in me--parts that I never knew existed. As children grow, so do parents. I have evolved into a better person with the courage to overcome all obstacles because of the love that I have for my children.
