Natural disasters throughout the world are very frightening although there might be reasons to look at them in a different perspective? How you may ask, seeing homes and hundreds of people panic for their lives is all a natural reaction because we don’t know what to do for the most part. However there are other ways into viewing these disasters not only as that nature stops by a decides to struck a certain place on earth but, that we have a partial responsibility in these disasters. We all influence how earth's environments work and how we treat it eventually builds up and causes natural disasters. For the most part literature can give you a whole different perspective on natural disasters.
In the book Black Nature Four Centuries of African American Nature Poetry by Camille T. Dungy she gives many examples of natural disasters in cycle six. Take one of the poems named “Earthquake Blues” by Ishmael Reed talks about an one of the most devastating disasters an earthquake. It’s a short poem as well as a story. How an earthquake was felt by animals before it struck, then it gets into details how the earthquakes took the life of a little child in a nursery. However the most significant line in the story was “ Mr. Earthquake Mr. Earthquake you don’t know good from bad” which made so much sense to me. A natural disaster hits when it hits it doesn’t know if it's causing something good or bad. Some disaster happen where a few people can be hurt and others occur where many lives are at
While I have listed many natural disasters that one would need to prepare for, what about the government failing. Many citizens feel that the government is encroaching on our fundamental rights as Americans. Take for example Jade Helm 15, a military training exercise. While the government is telling us it’s just an exercise so that the everyday citizen can get used to the presence of military in their neighborhoods and in their towns, is that really what’s going on? Or is this just another ploy to have the government take over the American citizens and it turn into another Hitler debacle? Some groups suggest that this is a ruse to implement Martial Law on the citizens. On the other hand though there has been a lot of small terrorist attacks on military bases lately so having the presence of military in the communities might just be a preemptive measure of what’s to come. “The cause of the underlying concerns is that we see instances, like a shooting in Fort Hood by a terrorist, that the President labels workplace violence. We see the President come to the border in Texas and say it’s safer than it’s ever been,” Abbott told Austin-based NBC affiliate KXAN-TV. “And so I think it was a misplaced perception by people in Texas who have problems with the Obama administration and connected that trust with the Obama administration to the military” (Viser). This should be a concern of American. We should be preparing for government fall out, or even something that is happening
And it involves interaction with familiar faces, tasks, procedures, and organizations. (Auf der Heide, Erik. 1989) An emergency is generally personal in nature. A disaster is “an event associated with the impact of a natural hazard, which leads to increased mortality, illness and/or injury, and destroys or disrupts livelihoods, affecting the people or an area such that they (and/or outsiders) perceive it as being exceptional and requiring external assistance for recovery” (Cannon 1994, 29, fn.2). Finally, a catastrophe can be viewed as “…any disaster that overwhelms the ability of state, local, and volunteer agencies to adequately provide victims with such life-sustaining mass care services as food, shelter, and medical assistance within the first 12 to 24 hours.” (GAO, Disaster Management, 1993, p. 3).
A natural disaster is a natural event such as a flood, earthquake, or hurricane that causes great damage or loss of life. “The Perfect Storm” by Sebastian Junger and “Super Disasters of the 21st Century” by Jacqueline Adams describes the cause and effect of nature’s savagery. Each author uses similar and different strategies and techniques to accomplish this goal. In an excerpt from the article “Super Disasters of the 21st Century,” Jacqueline Adams points out recent disasters and provides an in depth look at how hurricanes, earthquakes, and tsunamis occur and the devastation that result. In an excerpt from “The Perfect Storm”, Sebastian Junger combines a first person anecdote
Imagine living your life on a regular day for you and BOOM! Your life is now suddenly completely changed, everything you thought was normal or part of you has changed. This is what natural disasters tend to make happen in your life, they affect us in many ways. In this essay i will discuss the various elements each author uses to express the causes and effects of disasters. The author Jacqueline Adam clearly expresses the causes and effects of disasters through the use of text structure, choice of vocabulary and use of data and details.
In the last decade alone, there have been a number of natural disasters that have caused substantial physical damage and great emotional distress to the people who were affected. The aftermath of a natural disaster presents many concerns; communities become displaced, health risks and complications occur, food scarcity becomes a result of lost crops, and emotional aftershocks become apparent. Some Haitian’s have yet to recover from the earthquake they experienced in 2010. (Davis, 2015) “According to FEMA, the total damage for hurricane Katrina is estimated at $108 billion.” (CNN News, 2015), and 86,000 lives were taken in the earthquake of Pakistan in 2005 (EERI, 2006). In 2008, communities of Sichuan, China, endured a 7.9 magnitude earthquake that collapsed several buildings, killing over 87,000 people. Buildings had very poor infrastructures, which caused the destruction of many local schools. This contributed to the deaths of thousands of school aged children (BBC News, 2013). However, the Boxing Day tsunami was one of the largest and most destructive natural disasters of
A natural disaster is a critical phenomenon of a natural process from the earth such as an earthquake, flood, drought or typhoon which impacts significantly on human life and human social activities (March, 2002; Hutton, 2008). These natural disasters suddenly disturb a population everyday life placing them into a helpless state of emergency and suffering. The greater magnitude of the disaster is, the bigger it exerts pressure on the local resources and infrastructure to a breaking point where provision such as medical and nursing care, transportation of food and protection against harsh weather condition is shortage. Also by overwhelming the local resources, the normal smooth running of the community becomes a catastrophic stage (Dilley, et al., 2005; WHO, 2018).
The Earth can be characterized by its unknown natural phenomenon There are different types of natural hazards that can happen, from Tsunamis, earthquakes, landslides ect. For instance, earthquakes are natural disasters that are characterized by vibrations and shaking within the ground, some earthquakes have the potential to become deadly. These quakes are among a number of natural disasters that can happen without warning. Earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides are some of these dangers that can vary in magnitude and size, from small, barely noticeable waves, shake, or slides to violent waves, shaking, or slides that carry the potential to destroy buildings and threaten life. Due to the uncertainty of when these disasters might happen, these
Before I looked into this topic of these crazy natural disasters I did not know that much about Hurricanes and all that imply. When Br. Little gave me the option to choose whatever natural disaster case I want this was easily my first choice. I have used information from cites but will probably will most likely be quotes because I cannot summarize science all that much so if it looks like plagiarism it was not intended to be. As we were talking about it in class it really interested me and how much it can impact a city or a country. Hurricanes are so fascinating to me. As we were talking about it in class it really interested me and how much it can impact a city or a country. We get the term Hurricane from the word ‘Taino’ a Native American word meaning “evil spirit of the wind” (40 Facts About Hurricanes - Conserve Energy Future).
Various disasters throughout the Nation remain a great threat to our communities. In most cases, many of these disasters catch first responders and emergency managers off guard, and create disruption in the lives and livelihood of individuals, their families, and communities. In this paper, I provide an example and description of the three categories of disasters: natural disaster, accidental human-made disaster, and deliberate human-made disaster. Additionally, I discuss psychological effects of disasters and the differences that distinguish each disaster from each other. Lastly, I conclude with future recommendations for emergency management as it pertains to the three disasters.
Indeed, natural disasters are uncontrollable, dangerous, and terrifying in the sea as well as land. These horrible events change our lives, our creations including homes, and most noticeably the Earth. Even though we can not manage what nature brings or does
Have you ever been face to face with a natural disaster? Well if one has they will understand the perplexing confusion it bestows upon them. In order to make it more understandable for one who has not lived through such an unfathomable experience the article ¨The Story of an Eyewitness¨ by Jack London and ¨Leaving Desire¨ by Jon Lee Anderson ae here to help describe what it is like to live through something. The terror and the feeling to leave someone or something. behind will be in grave detail.
All over the world natural disasters are happening. Is special in its own way some just destroy property others kill on a wide scale and others just make life hard. In this article we are comparing and contrasting two natural disasters a flood in San Jose and a mudslide in Mocoa Colombia.
Disasters such as 9/11, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and the 2011 Japan earthquake/tsunami have shook up nearly all individuals worldwide in some way or another. One article mentions that the prevalence and severity of disasters and the number of individuals affected has been
While natural disasters such as floods, drought and hurricanes are commonly thought to occur due to environmental forces such as weather, climate and tectonic movements; a deeper investigation into the ‘disaster’ displays other contributing forces. Human factors have a large, if not equal, contribution to the occurrance and outcome of such disasters (Pelling, 2001). As Pelling (2001) argues, there is both a physical and human dimension to ‘natural disasters’. The extent to which the natural occurrence of a physical process, such as a flood or earthquake, impacts on society is constructed by that society, creating a ‘disaster’ as measured by a
Natural disaster is one of the major issues that the world is facing now a day. Natural disaster is caused by nature they are difficult to predict when it's going to happen, how to handle it and it's impossible to stop it. Weather is one of the major natural disaster that is going around this year it may include hurricanes, tornadoes and the weather conditions being so cold or so hot. It’s very important to be prepared for these kinds of events when they happen especially in the countries that are not prepared for this particular disaster.
