There are three general types of courage: social/moral courage, intellectual/emotional courage and physical courage. Social/moral courage describes a way of courage where you put your popularity aside and take risks that might be embarrassing or jeopardize your popularity. Intellectual/emotional courage involves facing the truth even when it might be difficult and to question thinking and ideas. Physical courage is when you try to help other people when you could end up risking your injuring yourself, or when you take risks that might seem dangerous or unnecessary. Jesse Aarons is a 5th grader. He lives in a rural area in the Southeast part of the United States of America on a farm. The book probably takes place in the 1970’s. The main conflict in the book is the friendship between Jesse and Leslie. Leslie is Jesse’s one and only best friend. Their friendship is a conflict because a friendship between a boy and a girl was very uncommon back in those days, and sometimes even now at their ages. Also, Leslie is the new kid in school who is really different from everybody else, so Jesse and Leslie got teased by their fellow classmates. They act courageously by being friends even though they are teased for it. This demonstrates a great deal of social and moral courage. Bravery is a synonym of courage.
