The Author of the passage is debating, whether student athletes should be awarded monetary compensation for their contribution to teams that garner millions of dollars for universities. The author uses appeal to Logos and Pathos to build his argument on the subject, and to help persuade the reader to agree with the the argument they are trying to make.

Politicians are the most persuasive people in the world. During an election, the most successful politicians are those who use Aristotle’s three appeals (Logos, Pathos, and Ethos) effectively. By not only establishing themselves with voters, but also appealing to voters’ emotional side and using evidence to support the effectiveness of their political platform. As a politician persuades voters, an author must similarly persuade their audience. For an author to persuade an audience, the author must use the three appeals effectively; in which, when observing the works of Nicholas Carr, Alexis Madrigal, and Rev. Billy Graham respectively, it is shown that all three authors use one of the appeals effectively.

Throughout his speech in Act 3, Mark Antony uses Pathos, Ethos, and Logos to subtly convince the commoners to turn against the conspirators. He uses Ethos, or the ethical appeal, many times throughout the speech, most notably in his first line; “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears!” He is attempting to make himself seem more honorable from the very beginning of his speech. Throughout the rest of the speech, he constantly questions Brutus’s Ethos. Brutus, who was believed to be honorable, had not been questioned on what he said until Mark Antony began to contrast his word to Caesar’s.

The three approach types are ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is when you have chosen your approach which is the tone of the paper. Pathos is when you have your emotional appeal for your paper. This to me is the most important part of the paper. Logo is your source or logic providing evidence of your rebuttal.

Alone, the use of only ethos, pathos, or logos would make for a semi-interesting story, but together, they tell a believable account of real events. Beatty makes use of all three techniques to connect with her audience and share her own story as well as hard facts that verify the events. The powerful combination of ethos, pathos, and logos conveys Beatty’s story convincingly.

Music in Your Ears. In the articles, “Music is Worthless,” written by Steve Lawson and “Nashville Skyline: Searching for the Heart of Country” written by Chet Flippo, both authors use the rhetorical tools: ethos, pathos, and logos. In “Music is Worthless,” Lawson comes across many aspects on what music is really worth and how it is valued, while in “Nashville Skyline: Searching for the Heart of Country,” Flippo tries to find where country music was lost and where it still can be found. Although, music can be perceived in many ways, Lawson and Flippo use the rhetorical tools ethos, pathos, and logos to help the reader understand their reasoning on certain music.

The rhetorical device that I thought was most effective was his use of Pathos. I believe his purpose for using this type of rhetoric is to reach the heart of those he was writing to in hopes of moving them so much so that they feel a, “call to action,” so to speak. While some may argue that Martin Luther King, Jr.’s(MLK) use of logos was most effective, I disagree because while it is possible to persuade someone with logic, wouldn’t you feel compelled to act immediately if something moves your heart rather than waiting for your brain to convince your heart and then act. For example, in paragraph 7, it states, “We have waited for more than 340 years for our constitutional and God given rights.” as well as, “when you suddenly find your tongue

In the articles “Alone in the Crowd” and “As technology Gets Better, Will Society Get Worse?,” Michael Price and Tim Wu, respectively acknowledge the effects of technological advances. While both Price and Wu use effective rhetorical strategies in their articles, one presents their argument in a more persuasive manner. Wu effectively convinces his audience that as a society we continue to advance technologically, but for the wrong reasons. Price references an interview with Sherry Turkle, to convey his opinion that the social media frenzy consumes our society. Price and Wu both present their point of view, but Wu has more factual information to justify his argument. The appeal to emotion is stronger in Price’s article; however, in this situation Wu’s logos appeal is more rhetorically effective. Beyond Ethos, Pathos, and

Aristotle believed Rhetoric’s main purpose was to persuade an audience. (Rorty 1996). Aristotle claimed that there were 3 main appeals that the persuader would use in order to convince the audience that their view is the right one, or that their product is the best. Aristotle would argue that these arguments all have a basis in “common sense”, meaning that the persuader can come to a conclusion based off of the audiences shared, and agreed upon knowledge (Gregoric 2007). Logos, Ethos, and Pathos are the three type of appeals Aristotle uses to describe the rhetoric of persuasion.

After considering the information in this week’s instructor guidance and readings, I understand ethos, pathos, and logos to be... Ethos: is used in an argument when the writer would like to appeal to their audience’s ethics. If a reader can see the credibility in the writer’s opinion they are likely to believe their argument. Pathos: is used in an argument when the writer would like to appeal to their audience’s emotion. Pathos is often used to evoke an emotional response from the audience.

The speaker used different types of appeals towards his topic. He first used Pathos, by explaining how he was a firefighter and how he wanted to save lives by “slaying dragons”, which means to put out the fire. In his topic he showed how there is a new dragon that he wanted to slay, a dragon that consisted of five different dragons, each head had a disease or illness that is now killing many people. By using this fiction picture and showing his audience how much people are dying because of not living a healthy lifestyle shows the appeal to emotions that the speaker used in his introduction. Speaker, Occasion, Audience, Purpose, and Subject are 5 different interactions that is shown throughout literature. SOAPS is the acronym for these 5 interactions. Rhetoric is when you or someone were to be persuading a person with writing or speaking to them. Rhetoric is broken down into 3 different types of appeals which are ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos means appeals to ethics-convincing someone with previous experience (Ex. Doctor), logos means appeals logic, and pathos is appeals to emotions. Both the rhetoric appeals and the 5 different interactions can be mixed into a form of writing. These 5 different interactions and the 3 different types of appeals can be found in variety of texts like the texts that had interactions with the moon landing in the late 1970s. Those of which are the printing press writing about the moon landing, a speech that was prepared by President Nixon if needed to be stated, a person stating his opinion of the rocket ship taking flight, and a drawing created to be a political cartoon.

Connection, trust, and facts make up the basis of how to persuade, which is vital for science, writing essays, and many other fields. Trust is depended on bias and experience of a subject, this is a tool of persuasion called ethos. For example, Mr. North (a teacher who has taught for many years) would have a more convincing ethos than a new teacher on the subject of students. While ethos is important, facts and statistics, logos, are considered more trustworthy than status of a figure. Logos include evidence that are supported to help prove a point, a fact or statistic could be: students are more likely to succeed if they are working in groups. An argument is a two-sided claim that has facts and evidence to back up and justify each side of the argument. The purpose of any argument is to persuade the opponent and the audience to one side or the other. The goal of the speaker or writer is to use persuasive techniques that end with the audience’s vote. These techniques include pathos, logos, and ethos. Each one of these tactics plays an important role in producing a strong case in a debate or argument. Recently, in this composition class, I have put these techniques to use to create a strong argument with two other classmates. Our debate topic was whether or not the death penalty should continue to be legal in the United States. My team served as the proponents of the argument and tried to use each one of these three main persuasive techniques, pathos, logos, and ethos.

Rhetoric’s are used in every occurence of our lives whether we are aware of them or not. From the way we greet new ideas and thoughts, to the way we function with already existing notions, regardless, rhetorics have incorporated into our daily life from the first few months of our lives. The dictionary recognizes rhetorical to mean ‘the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques.’ What’s the main concept to explore of rhetorics, are the main uses and techniques that are commonly used.
