In the play Macbeth, William Shakespeare writes about Macbeth going into the depths of darkness and despair as he seeks the throne ignoring the possibility of consequences. In Macbeth, William Shakespeare shows that when power is involved good judgment is clouded and poor character flaws such as greed are shown. For example, when he sees that Malcolm is next in line for the throne as “a step on which ‘he’ must fall down on, or else o’erleap, for in ‘his’ way it lies.” (1.4.50-52), this demonstrates one of the first signs of greed and ambition of Macbeth. Macbeth now thought of Malcolm as an obstruction on his path to the throne. Now that King Duncan had named Malcolm heir to his throne, Macbeth had to somehow make himself king regardless of
Power can change people for the good or for the bad. It can make one so greedy that they will do anything for it and won’t let anything stand in their way for power. The play Macbeth illustrates this well, it shows the impact and consequences that the greed for power has on some people. However, it also shows that there are still some who are not sucked in by the greed that power can bring.
Humans, by nature, are very dependent individuals. Greed engulfs any selflessness we have and leads us to do unforgivable things. We act out of love and seek acceptance, even if it means compromising our own values and ignoring our conscience. When our actions catch up to us, our fear drives us to find a sense of security. Macbeth allowed greed and his own insecurities to destroy his life, and let fear dominate his quest to find security.
The only way for Macbeth to become king would be for Duncan to die and for Malcolm to be fearful of his life and leave Scotland. Before the king is murdered, Macbeth speaks, “Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee. I have thee not, and yet I see thee still. Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible to feeling as to sight?
In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, we see the impact that Greed can have on ones entire life. From the earliest manifestation of simple greed to power to the ultimate extension in the form of Murder, Macbeth elicits a transformation and demonstration of greed that has seldom been seen in literature. In Macbeth’s life greed was overwhelming enough to make his actions change, it changed how he treated his peers, and distorted his mind.
