The Outsiders Hero Essay “Suddenly, in the red glow and the haze, I remembered wondering what it was like in a burning ember.” (Hinton 22) In the Outsiders Johnny was the true hero in the story. Ponyboy knew without Johnny they wouldn’t be the same. Johnny ends up saving many people's lives because he knew it was the right thing and that is true heroism. Johnny is a hero because he saved his friend Ponyboy from a drowning in a pond. He may seem like the opposite of a hero for killing a guy but he also saved his friend from death which is a brave and noble act of heroism. “I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you. And they had a blade.” (Hinton 50). He was such a good friend to Ponyboy that he was willing to kill somebody to save him, and that is a true hero. Johnny grew up with the hardest childhood than all the other greasers but still acts like a normal teenager. He ran into the flames “He looked over his shoulder and saw the door was blocked by flames, then pushed open the window and tossed out the nearest kid.” (Hinton 92). This is evidence that Johnny was willing to save somebody that he didn’t even know. This is heroism because it took courage to run into a burning building, save kids and have a good time at the same time. He also saved his friend Ponyboy's life by pushing him out of the way inside the building. He also “was burned pretty severely” (Hinton 95). Overall, Johnny used acts of heroism because he knew it was right. Johnny knew that saving those kids were worth his sacrifice and that is true
