The Odyssey, Argumentative Essay
Hope alone is a life-changing emotion or feeling, it alone can decide someone's fate in a life or death situation in which they have s main say in what happens. For example, in the book we read the Odyssey, there are multiple areas where hopes play a pretty big factor in the story. The Odyssey is a story where a man named Ulysses had to go to war for ten years and had a rough ten-year journey to get back home to his wife, son, family, and friends. He never gave up his hope that he would see his family again and that is the main thing in this essay is to never give up hope.
Ulysses had to go through many different obstacles to get home and could’ve easily given up and lost hope, but he didn’t and that created a great story. Ulysses while on his journey had lost men but was then in a way trapped with Calypso for seven years and then also with Circe for a couple years before he left. During this period of time, Ulysses could’ve lost hope in multiple areas including the hope that he’d ever make it back home, hope that his wife was still loyal to him, etc. But Ulysses never gave up hope and made it back home safely and just in time to claim his home, son, and wife after twenty long years.

Whilst all the of the suitors had thought that Ulysses was dead Telemachus still believe and hoped that his father was both alive and that he would be home soon. When his father arrives and he finds out it’s like all of that hope paid off since later in the story they kill the suitors and really regain power in their own home. Telemachus had a really strong hope that his father was going to come home and he did. He never gave up hope and after twenty years of waiting, he was finally able to meet his
Still he searches out for clues and any information of the possible demise of his father. He is willing to go far and wide just for the knowledge of his father's whereabouts. He is a faithful son and aids his father in all possible ways as Odysseus returns and reclaims what is legitimately his. Telemachus is there to fight side by side with his father whom he has only loved in his heart and mind. Some would call that blind faith. Just as the God whom we serve today calls us to love and serve him without seeing him with our eyes, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed" (John 20:29). Although Odysseus is Telemachus' earthly father, one can see the parallels. He is as devoted to Odysseus as Penelope is; yet he has no actual memory of his father what so ever.
The Odyssey models many challenges faced in our modern life. Throughout the epic, Odysseus and his men found themselves in situations very similar to ones we might face sometime in our lives. Situations such as being away from family or loved ones for along time and scenarios that transcend across many ages and cultures such as him avoiding eating the lotuses or resisting the temptation to eat while at Helio’s castle. The Odyssey relates to modern day because it has examples of many modern situations and because it models modern virtues such as loyalty and accepting consequences.
When one doesn't have hope anymore nothing is possible and you will be vulnerable to failure. In the story the odysseus what is needed is hope. Odysseus was gone as soon as his son was born. The war he was gone to lasted about 20 years. The trip back home from the war was a whole different chaotic obstacle odysseus had to overcome to be reunited with his loved ones he hadn't seen in over 2 decades. He needed hope and perseverance to be able to see his family again.
Can you know true happiness without knowing sorrow? Happiness is a subjective emotion. Some people say they cannot be happy without first experiencing bad things. I do not think this is entirely true. Babies know happiness when they get to play with their favorite toy or when they see something new that excites them. Now some might argue that babies have experienced sorrow or unhappiness when they are crying however, I think their short attention span makes them forget sorrow much easier than happiness.
Tales, Creatures and mythical adventures tells the story of Percy Jackson and Odysseus. Their both known as courageous heroes. In their journeys they both share motivation, adventures and assistance. However they have different roles in their characters. In there perspective of their adventures Percy and Odyssey had a motivation to start a mission and they had similar barriers throughout their experience.
In the movie of “The Odyssey” I defined different kinds of Faith. The Faith in God, that He is the reason why we could experience and rejoice the wondrous creation on this earth. Faith wherein the following generation should always remember the sacrifice and gifts He had done for all of us. Such in every suffering and hardships we take, one should trust his faithful word.
When I began reading the story of The Odyssey I was absolutely confused, and as I continued reading the story it all slowly began to make more sense in my mind. One of the major themes in The Odyssey we could it to be hospitality. Hospitality is defined as the friendly reception and treatment of guests or strangers (dic). In Greek costumes hospitality is a must have. If the Gods that Odysseus inquired on his journey home would have not shown Odysseus and his men hospitality, Odysseus would have never returned home and would have probably died out in the sea.
Love, Patience, and determination, these things keep Odysseus alive for a long time of searching way back home from Trojan War to Ithaca. The movie is all about the adventure of Odysseus, and it is one of the most famous ancient Greek epic that was written by Homer. I like the movie because it’s full of adventure, how Odysseus still manage to come back to Ithaca despite of many obstacles he faced because he disrespect the god of the sea, Poseidon.
Hope shows the desire of one for something to happen. It serves as a light in the darkness, and is like the rainbow at the end of the Great Flood. Through any trial, through every ounce of despair, or trouble, it serves as a shining star of promise. With the wars that came and went, stories of people that survived and lived through those wars have come up. I could not have imagined any experience worse than those who lived through those wars. Almost all of it tells us that those people have had hope in their hearts that things would eventually get better. It is truly amazing how hope have remained in those people even when things are dire. It is undeniable that hope is one of the most difficult things to crush in human
“Hope” by Lisa Mueller is a poem that entranced me from the moment that I read the first syllable. The picture that she painted with her elegant words pulled me into the beige colored pages of my textbook and mesmerized me throughout all four stanzas. “Hope” inspired its desired effect as each word in this poem washed over me with an awe-aspiring feeling. This poem made me feel almost unworldly as it persuaded me to reach out and grasp for my own aspirations. Mueller’s poem also awakened the realization that no matter how discouraged I might be, hope will always prevail and pick me back up once more. Lisa Mueller’s “Hope” indicates that hope is something that we all long for; we all hope for good fortune, fine weather, happier times, love, and success. Hope plays a crucial role in our everyday lives, as it fuels and motivates us to accomplish our goals, such as getting a promotion, having a child with the person you love, or finding your place with God. We are surrounded by hope; it is existential, spiritual and pragmatic. It is the essence of our being.
When people are going through hard times they often turn to a thing called, “hope.” According to Merriam-Webster’s online Dictionary, the definition of hope is, “to want something to happen or be true and think that it could happen or be true.” But what the dictionary doesn’t tell us is that, “hope,” can be something someone has. Emily Dickinson wrote in her poem “‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers,” that hope is like a bird. In the novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao hope is something they believed in for when the fuku had gone away. Hope cannot prevail unless there has been some sort of suffering. Both this poem and novel exemplify the suffering that has to happen before you can have hope. Emily Dickinson and Junot Diaz write about suffering and finding hope, this encourages their readers to
Hope is an important concept to understand to comprehend the impact that it has on societies and political actors. Edgoose defines it as “Hope, to give the most encompassing definition, must be seen in its connection with possibility and not inevitability or expectation.
In the final stanza, Ulysses addresses the mariners with whom he has worked, traveled, and weathered life's storms over many years. He declares that although they are both old, they still have the potential to do something good and honorable before "the long day wanes." He encourages them to make use of their old age because "'tis not too late to seek a newer world." He declares that his goal is to sail onward "beyond the sunset" until his death. Maybe, he suggests, they may even reach the "Happy Isles," or the paradise of eternal summer described in Greek mythology where great heroes like the warrior Achilles were believed to have been taken after their deaths. Although Ulysses and his mariners are not as strong as they were in youth, they are "strong in will" and are sustained by their
In the short story, ‘“Hope” is the thing with feathers” , by Emily Dickinson. Dickinson talks about hope and the meaning of hope. Hope gives you something to hold on. Hope is a factor that keeps you going. Hope is like your hero or your batman, hope saves you when you are in trouble. Why hope is like a hero is because it always saves you at the right time.. Hope will give you a hand when you are down and make you stronger each day because every time you get in a situation that hurts you, you learn even more.
I was raised here, in a country in which your competing for grades, honor rolls, getting on a sports teams, things like this.Usually most people stay for a time period then jet off to another place to start a new journey. However, since I have lived in one country for my whole life, I have the same goals, habits, distractions and problems I currently face. In the Odyssey, I picked three characters who I could relate to in my life. With Poseidon, he redirected Odysseus’s path and made the journey even harder for him by setting up numerous obstacles. Then came the sirens, who offered a distraction to Odysseus and his men, but eventually overcame it by plugging earmuffs into their ears. Finally, the last character that was chosen was Calypso who’s island was “the island of trouble” for Odysseus. These three characters cause problems for Odysseus, but he reached his island(his home) Ithaca. With these three characters, I can relate to my life since I have had a Poseidon, Calypso, and Sirens who stopped me from my Ithaca.
