This passage reveals “the hand of the author.” The author uses many descriptive words, similes and hyperboles. In the first part of the passage when the author mentions his leg being like a chunk of a burnt pine log. Bradbury used a simile to show the relationship between his leg and a burnt pine log, that is his leg felt as heavy as a chunk of burnt pine log. In the second part of the passage, the author uses a hyperbole to exaggerate the situation to show the reader how much pain Montag is feeling. It gives the reader a clear understanding of how intense the moment is.
