Theory and Hypothesis:
The transfer of executive power in the United States which occurred at the beginning of the year has led to drastic policy change and rising political tensions. The past and current president held immensely different views on family planning and abortion. Many women march in protest against their new president, who talks of outlawing Roe v. Wade. While other women cheer on his declarative decisions, which make procreation and family a national core value. It is pertinent to examine the affect abortion has on society before such drastic change in law may occur in regards to the legality of abortion. First, we can operationally define abortion has the expulsion of a fetus or embryo from a woman’s uterus during pregnancy.
Roe v. Wade was passed in 1973 by the United States Supreme Court. The ruling permitted women to obtain an abortion during early trimesters of pregnancy. Before this court ruling it was illegal for an expecting mother to abort her fetus, unless her life wad endangered. Now, over fifty nine million abortions have occurred in the United States since the legalization of Roe v. Wade. (Guttmacher Institute, n.d.) To this day, abortion legality remains a controversial, passionate topic. This new law essentially gave women the ability to mimic the independent, career driven actions that have been expected of men for centuries.
