Odysseus always has allies with him when danger is afoot, which is often. Odysseus’ crew is loyal to him during the voyage home. The allies he makes throughout his journey are loyal to him and help him return home safely. His family demonstrates their loyalty to him when he returns home by helping to defeat the Suitors. Whenever Odysseus is facing peril, the people close to him always help him and this demonstrates loyalty. First, Odysseus’ crew remain loyal to him as they keep getting into perilous situations even though Odysseus does not reciprocate the loyalty. When they are getting close to the Sirens, Odysseus tells them, “Therefore/ you are to tie my up, tight as a splint,/ erect along the mast, lashed to …show more content…
After Odysseus wins the challenge, he calls upon his son, “and the prince/ Telemachus, true son of King Odysseus,/ belted his sword on, clapped hand to his spear,/ and with a clink and glitter of keen bronze/ stood by his chair, in the forefront near his father” (5.1401-1405). Odysseus has just completed the challenge that Penelope set for her hand in marriage. The Suitors are now enraged that all the time they spent on Ithaca was wasted just because of a filthy beggar who turns out to be Odysseus so they are going to kill him. Before they could carry out their wish, Odysseus calls up his son, Telemachus. It is intriguing that Telemachus would fight with his father against so many men even though Odysseus was not there for most of his life. This shows a lot about the undaunted loyalty that his family gives him to return alive and defeat the enemy that was trying to take the land. Telemachus finally felt reunited with his father and would do anything to keep him alive and give him back his position of King of

Loyalty Lives in Royalty Odysseus’ beautiful wife, Penelope, explains, “Young men, my suitors, now that King Odysseus is no more, go slowly, keen as you are to marry me, until, I can finish this web” (Homer 96). Homer, the author of The Odyssey, displays Penelope’s intelligence by revealing her sagacious plan about the shroud. Secretly, she unweaves the shroud every night to prevent herself from getting married to one of the suitors, whilst waiting upon the return of Odysseus. The event proves Penelope’s loyalty to her husband, even while the protagonist remains lost at sea. In addition to Penelope’s loyalty, Telemachus fights beside his father against the suitors and Athena guides Odysseus home.

In The Odyssey, there were many people who were loyal or disloyal. Most of the ones who were loyal got what they wanted in the end because they stuck through with what they believed. The ones who were not loyal were led to failure or suffering. The Odyssey shows a few examples of how loyalty effects success.

Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey takes place in and around ancient Greece near the time of the Trojan War. The protagonist is Odysseus, the guile hero and king of Ithaca. Just after his first son Telemachus was born, Odysseus is called to battle in the ten year long Trojan war. After the war, angry at his and his men’s hubris in battle, the gods made the return journey last ten harsh years. Meanwhile, growing up fatherless, Telemachus has to cautiously take charge of the hold, while staying loyal to Odysseus with their home filled with demanding suitors that woo his mother, Penelope. Although Telemachus acts with more caution and didn’t always have his father by his side, they both display loyalty and bravery as warriors in battle.
Loyalty has always been seen as a commendable trait, not only in human beings but in any creature, all through history. Soldiers have admired their enemies for their loyalty to fallen comrades, thousands of stories have been written about the intense loyalty animals portray for their owners, and even companies in the workforce look for loyalty in potential employees. Loyalty has been seen as something that distinguishes the trustworthy from the untrustworthy, and something that sets the great apart from the good. The archetypal hero commonly has a cause, whether it be another person or personal beliefs, that they are loyal to, and this unwavering loyalty is what makes them appear so highly in the eyes of the reader. Loyalty can be found in practically any work of literature, but within The Torah, The Odyssey, and Inanna is the idea that true loyalty, although a rare attribute, is the key to a successful relationship.
The Odyssey is an epic poem that is taken place after the Trojan War. Odysseus and his men were sailing from Troy to Ithica. The trip lasted 10 years and they had some positives and negatives. So even though they had their ups and downs, throughout the adventure they learned many lessons throughout their journey to Ithica. As Odysseus home from Troy, he changes physically and mentally as he learns the following lessons: cunning overpowers physical strength giving into temptations has negative effects, and loyalty and perseverance are heroic and admirable.
In the Odyssey, Odysseus shows loyalty when he stands up to the Cyclops Polyphemus. During this, Odysseus shows loyalty to his men by tying them under the two rams’ bellies, and sending them outside. Then Odysseus holds on to the ram’s wool, he had to have upper body strength, and he choose him to put himself last in leaving the cave. Odysseus did this so that the Cyclops didn’t know that they left the cave.
Odysseus also knows that he can depend on his now grown son. He does not hesitate to stand with his adult child to defend his home and his honor. Loyalty has no limits. Not only is there devotion amidst the family unit of Odysseus, it is also evident in the relationship between the gods and Odysseus. Although he has gone trough many trials and tribulations in the last twenty years, Odysseus is still faithful to pray and seek counsel and blessings. After Zeus relents and demands the gods to allow our hero to return home, Odysseus is given the information and guidance and favor to complete his
Another trait that Odysseus demonstrates repeatedly throughout the story is his loyalty. In various situations he never gives up on his crew, even when he has reason to. During an episode in the epic, Odysseus travels to the underworld to receive a prophecy. He meets his great friend Elpenor, who has died earlier in Circe’s hall. Because he is unburied and unmourned he asks Odysseus to build a cairn in his honor. Odysseus replies, “Unhappy spirit, / I promise you the barrow and the burial.” (Homer, lines 609-610). Although Odysseus is preoccupied with finding Tiresias, he shows loyalty to his crew mate by spending time with his spirit, and carrying out the spirit’s request. It could have been easy for Odysseus to ignore the spirit of Elpenor, but Odysseus shows a real emotional reply to this meeting. Not only does he show loyalty to his crew but his homeland as well. Although he could have given up during the ten year span Odysseus wandered from home, he persisted even though giving up would have been easier. At one point Odysseus is detained by the enchantress, Circe, but remains determined to reach home:
Long-tried royal Odysseus is tested for devotion and trust through the absence of his loved ones. His character can be seen through the actions and voice of his very own son Telemachus. Since Telemachus and Odysseus have been away from each other
Wanting his home back he went in and declared he was the Odysseus, and started to get rid of the others. Some of the men that wanted to marry Odysseus’s wife were not happy and became enraged. The men either fled or wanted to kill Odysseus. Telemachus wanted to help his father, which is Odysseus, but he didn’t want to put him in harm's way. Instead of risking his own son's life, instructing Telemachus, Odysseus said “Run then, while I hold them off with arrows as long as the arrows last. When all are gone if I’m alone they can dislodge me.” (959) Odysseus was ordering his son to get away. By taking control of the situation, he saved his son’s life and was brave enough to offer himself as a sacrifice. This is an important characteristic of showing true and genuine leadership. Similarly, I have shown leadership through-out my own life. During bowling season, I showed leadership throughout the
