Misrepresentation and Domination of Woman in Strindberg’s Miss Julie This paper examines misrepresentation and domination of women in August Strindberg’s play Miss Julie. In this play Strindberg presents his misogynist attitude by presenting Julie as a degenerated man hating half woman that indicates he holds a firmly conservative position regarding the role of women in society that makes one’s superiority over another. Julie’s free thinking and sexually aggressive behavior positions her in the new women category that raises the feminist voice against patriarchy. And the fact that these actions lead towards her destruction clearly indicates Strindberg’s opposition to liberal feminism. Despite of all rebellious activities of Julie she becomes the victim of male domination. Feminism is a complaint against patriarchy that refuses the cultural definition of women which attempts to fix women’s identity within the male dominated canon. Julie shows her will to take a caged bird with her because that is only creature whom she loves most. But Jean denies and his cruelty reaches into its height when he chops that bird in chopping board without any mercy. This act strongly presents male’s cruelty on female in the play and also foreshadows Julie’s disaster at the hand of Jean. She starts cursing herself and all the moments which she spend with him and also curses that moment when she conceived in her mother's womb and says he should also kill her like that innocent creature.
