EPIC JOURNEY ESSAY
In almost every Epic Journey story, the main character, the hero, faces many obstacles. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus, the main character, encounters a twenty-year journey. In this journey, Odysseus comes across Zeus’ son, a Cyclopes and he has trouble dealing with his own pride getting himself in trouble. Many real life lessons can be taught through Odysseus’s voyage. Odysseus’s journey teaches people that life does not come easy, the whole time he is fighting at sea. Another lesson people can take in from The Odyssey is when Odysseus is fighting off suitors that want to marry his wife, Penelope; the readers can understand that giving up certainly does not result in success. In The Odyssey, Odysseus goes through a twenty-year journey that is filled with obstacles. The whole time at sea, Odysseus fights off mystical creatures. Odysseus never gets a break from struggling against beasts. Odysseus had to cope with numerous injudicious crewmen. These crewmen caused many troubles for Odysseus and themselves. Odysseus fought through it for himself and the crewmen to return home. Odysseus states:

If any god has marked me out again for shipwreck, my tough heart can undergo it.
What hardship have I not long since endured at sea, in battle! Let the trial come. (5. 228-33)
This quote summed-up reveals that Odysseus goes through many obstacles on his journey home. In real life, the readers can interpret this quote to mean that life will always have its trials and tribulations. Another example of Odysseus’ adventures, in The Odyssey, that can be interpreted in real life’s journey was when Odysseus finally returned home after twenty-years just to have to fight off the suitors to get his wife back. Telemachus, Odysseus’s son, says:
And so you see why enemies fill our house in these days: all the princes of the islands,
Doulikhion, Same, wooded Zakynthos,
Ithaka too – lords of our island rock
The Odyssey is a story of Odysseus’s nostos. In the epic poem the reader follows Odysseus on his 20 year long voyage home. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is repeatedly referred to as noble, wise and heroic. Many times those qualities are based on his military escapades and kingly rule. The real personality of Odysseus is that of an arrogant liar and cheat. In terms of social mores, the undesirable traits are used to get Odysseus back home to the wife and kingdom he loves dearly. In his voyage back Odysseus has to face many powerful monsters that can kill him at will, and he has to outwit many of those monsters and seductresses to survive and continue his voyage. Through every new obstacle, Odysseus keeps his reunion with Penelope and his kingdom close to his heart. He tells Kalypso “what I want and all my days I pine for
The Odyssey is a story telling about the long journey of Odysseus, and his adventures with his crew. It tells about his dangerous encounters with a Cyclops, sea monsters and Sirens, and eventually making it home safe to his wife, Penelope. Although modern literary scholars of The Odyssey have argued that Odysseus is a hero, closer examination shows that Odysseus is not a hero. He is selfish to his crew by making decisions to put them in danger, he is unfaithful to his wife on the journey and does unjust actions by killing the Cyclops without a good explanation, and going out of his way to a sea monster. These actions put his crew in jeopardy. While a good leader and a hero do selfless acts, Odysseus did selfish acts.
In The Odyssey, Odysseus portrays an important trait to the story, perseverance. His perseverance really stands out as something that he has and always will have. On his long journey home, he never gives up and just stays where he is, no matter how tempting. He always manages to push through and keep getting closer to his goal of returning home. An example of when he does this is when he is faced with the challenge of getting past Skylla and Kharybdis. He knows that either path will kill at least some of his men and possibly him, but he knows he has to keep going. "And all this time,/ in travail,
Everyone faces struggles at some point in their life, no matter if you are a hero from an old mythical story or a modern day person living in Iowa. Even though the struggles faced by Odysseus and me are different, they have a common overlapping theme that ties them together. Which causes them in turn to be in fact very comparable. Both Odysseus and I face obstacles such as temptation, laziness, and distraction. Although his obstacles come from his want to go back home to Ithaca, mine are from my desire to live a happy and healthy lifestyle.
In conclusion, Odysseus overcame physical, mental, and emotional obstacles that create a parallel to real life, although they do have their differences. I have learned through The Odyssey that the journey, whether it be fictional or real, is rough and contains many hardships that will need to be overcome. I also learned that through hard work, perseverance, and being smart, anything is possible, and any obstacles can be
In Homer's epic poem The Odyssey, Odysseus faces many different obstacles and challenges throughout his life. Although in my life there won't be monsters and mythical creatures. There will be many different challenges and temptations. Hopefully I will overcome my challenges just as Odysseus has. With the amount of strength and courage that he did on my way to becoming a vet.
Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus is driven to many wanderings during which he sees many wonders and endures many sufferings. Part of Homer’s theme in The Odyssey is the vicissitudes that have promoted Odysseus’s various character traits.
Christopher Columbus, well known for his journey to the Americas in 1492, stated, “By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination.” By persevering through all of ones known and unknown obstacles and challenges, one shall arrive at their target battered and wizened, and with a number of great experiences and stories to share with those around them. As found in The Odyssey, Odysseus goes through many challenges, but returns home with stories to tell and experiences to share. In the poem “Courage,” many obstacles are listed, all of which are getting you to the unwanted goal of death. In the poem “Ithaka,” a journey is explained through a voyage towards the city of Ithaka, where it is explained

Odysseus comes to the cyclops’ cave due to his curiosity. “It is Odysseus’ famed curiosity that leads him to the cyclops cave and that makes him insist on waiting for the barbaric giant”(pg 922). Odysseus approaches polyphemus cave
The Odyssey is an epic poem that is taken place after the Trojan War. Odysseus and his men were sailing from Troy to Ithica. The trip lasted 10 years and they had some positives and negatives. So even though they had their ups and downs, throughout the adventure they learned many lessons throughout their journey to Ithica. As Odysseus home from Troy, he changes physically and mentally as he learns the following lessons: cunning overpowers physical strength giving into temptations has negative effects, and loyalty and perseverance are heroic and admirable.
From everyday events, to diseases you will face many “monsters” or obstacles in life. I feel that Homer's poem the Odyssey is like a model for life, it carries you through many obstacles that life can throw at you. While the obstacles Odysseus faces are unrealistic, we can face more realistic obstacles in everyday life. The Odyssey is a book full of obstacles, which is like life itself: a series of obstacles. After I finish highschool, I plan to study law at Yale University, while doing this I will face many obstacles in everyday life. I will face obstacles like illnesses, funding and injuries and other unexpected obstacles. In the Odyssey, Odysseus faced many different obstacles, such as a cyclops, a goddess, sirens, and many others. These obstacles can be compared to the obstacles we will face in every day. From this I can compare the Odyssey to life itself.
Temptation. Obstacles. Loss. These things are present in my life, but also in The Odyssey an epic poem by Homer. In the Odyssey the main character Odysseus faces problems while trying to get back home he gets messed with by the gods, tempted by the Lotus Eaters, and losses some of his men. The Odyssey symbolizes my life with the challenges Odysseus faces of temptation, obstacles, and loss.
Struggles are like demons when it comes down to actually accomplishing goals. On his way back home, since Odysseus used a trick that helped win the trojan war, he faces difficulties. The main struggle that Odysseus has to deal with, are god and goddesses that his men so happen to anger. His men made Zeus, the main god, mad because they attacked the Ciconians. This then leads to Zeus sending down a horrible storm, Odysseus and his men ended up drifting for nine days. The next god that he angered was Poseidon, after defeating an attacking Cyclops, it pleaded for poseidon’s help. Poseidon decided to put a cruel fate, that gives him many more years to back home. Through his journey he lost many men due to, getting caught in ferocious storms, getting changed into pigs by Circe the sorceress, and dying from unfortunate
The Odyssey, by Homer, is an epic poem about a treacherous journey filled with adventures, monsters, and gods. The Odyssey involves an epic hero, Odysseus who is trying to return home, Ithaca and reunite with his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus (which Odysseus only saw the day he was born) after years of separation. As you progress through the story, Odysseus and his crew encounter various mishaps with gods and other mythical creatures which make the journey home more difficult than it already was. Odysseus is considered the hero in the Odyssey because of his superior intelligence, his valor, and he also shows great bravery. Odysseus has shown these traits throughout the story in various ways, such as, in the adventure with the cyclops, in the adventure of Scylla and Charybdis, and in the adventure where Odysseus visits Tiresias.
In The Odyssey, the main character Odysseus travels a long and distant journey to find himself making many decisions that lead to consequences. Odysseus’s excursion took Homer three parts to explain. The first part was the description of how Ithica was struggling. This was when Odysseus went to the Trojan War. Then in part two and three is his accounts and how he struggles to get home after the war. The Gods make his journey tough, especially Poseidon. Even though Odysseus’s trip was long and difficult he achieved a lot from it. The journeys of Odysseus bring him both pain and pleasure. Odysseus learns a lot alongside his curiosity leading to a rich life packed with wisdom.
