The Odyssey, by Homer, is an epic poem about a treacherous journey filled with adventures, monsters, and gods. The Odyssey involves an epic hero, Odysseus who is trying to return home, Ithaca and reunite with his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus (which Odysseus only saw the day he was born) after years of separation. As you progress through the story, Odysseus and his crew encounter various mishaps with gods and other mythical creatures which make the journey home more difficult than it already was. Odysseus and his men encounter a giant, whose name is Polyphemus. Polyphemus traps Odysseus and his crew in a cave sealed shut with a giant boulder. Odysseus shows superior intelligence in this adventure is, by telling the cyclops that his name is ‘Noh-body’. This name becomes an essential factor later in the adventure when Odysseus and his crew stab the cyclops in the eye and blind him; “‘Noh-body has blinded me..’ yelled the cyclops”. This made it sound, like the cyclops was saying, nobody blinded me, this made the other cyclops’ think that in fact, nobody had hurt Polyphemus hence while being tied between sheep, Odysseus and his crew are able to escape. When people think of a hero, they think of a tall, handsome, loyal, brave, and a type of man that could do no wrong. The “hero” that is portrayed in the Odyssey is a man named Odysseus. This “hero” may be tall and handsome, but he is often arrogant, disrespectful, conceited, and rude. Odysseus consists of positive and negative characteristics that is shown in the text by Homer. These characteristics impact the characters day to day, or in the book’s case, the quests. In the Odyssey, Homer values the characteristics hospitality and cunning, but he objects bad leadership.

This implies that anyone can be heroic, everyone has faults even heroes which refers to personal opinions and people have different thoughts of characteristics a hero should have.
