Having Powers is Not Always an Advantage#5
In Of Mice and Men, there are characters that have powers. There are also many characters that have barely any to no power. These powers affect the character's personality or how they act in real life scenarios. These powers could help others, kill others, or kill the one using it. Many lives were at stake due to having them or having barely any power. The characters that have power are Lennie, George, and Curley, but for the unfortunate ones that have no powers are Candy, Crooks, and Curley’s wife.
First and foremost, Lennie has the power of strength and his power comes from his body and ability to lift heavy objects with ease. Lennie is described by the book as “A huge man, shapeless of face, with

Curley is described as “a lightweight and handy person” (Steinbeck 26). He receives his power from his dad due to his dad owning the ranch, which means he would not be in trouble whatever he does. Instead, if any of the workers disrespects him, he could then fire them within a couple of second which gives him power over the people. Curley uses his power to act as a powerful man, but this is lousy since he treats his dad’s workers if they were trash. This power actually hurts him more than it helps him. For example, he tried to act tough when Lennie was just smiling at the fact that he had a glove full of lotion. Curley tells Lennie,”Come on, ya big bastard. Get up on your feet. No son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at me. I’ll show ya who’s yella”(Steinbeck 62). This shows that Curley tries to prove his dominance to large people. He did this to Lennie and receives a broken hand back from him. Due to him trying to act tough in front of people larger and stronger than him, it hurts him …show more content…
Crook is an African American man, which meant that there was discrimination back then. That means that Crook does not have much power due to racism and receives disrespectful comments everytime a problem occurs by Curley’s dad. Curley’s dad “gives the stable hell” which means that Crooks is being yelled at(Steinbeck 19). Another reason why Crook does not have power because he has a crooked back when a horse kicked him in the back. Next we have Candy which is an old man who lost his right hand. Candy has been through many unpleasing experience. For example, Candy had an old dog that had many disabilities. A few disabilities were that it could not walk without it hurting, eat, or see so Carlson said,”I’ll put the old devil out of his misery right now”(Steinbeck 47). Another character that has barely to no powers is Curley’s wife. Back then, people discriminated women for a couple of reasons. Since that happened, Curley’s wife did not have much power. She had to stay at home and was not allowed to work at many places. She died near at the end of the book due to Lennie killing
It is known fact that extreme gender roles can be psychologically harmful and Steinbeck’s character Curley is a testament to this. Society in the novel believed that men are supposed to be strong and tall however Curley is none of these. He feels so pressured by society to look and act a certain way and so he resents men who are taller and is always trying to fight people who he does not match up to. The patriarchal system led Curley to feel the need to display his dominance and resort to violence. Candy describes
In this scene, Curley is feeling marginalized because of his size again. He is being left out and his wife is avoiding him which he blames on everything/everyone but himself. He refuses to admit that it is his personality that pushes everyone away, not his size. In result of feeling weak, he decides to turn to the one person who is weaker than him in the room. He decides to pick a fight and says he will show Lennie “who’s yella”.
The play Macbeth by Shakespeare is a great example of power affecting characters motives. The main characters that were affected by power are Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Their want for power causes Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to murder, betray their friends and allies and want what they cannot have. Lady Macbeth is so power hungry that her perception of right and wrong is blurred.
In the novella Of Mice and Men, the author Steinbeck expresses how power tangles around main characters. Both power and powerless are able to create positive and negative outcomes. There are Lennie Small and George Milton who show no restraint when it comes to power, Curley who suffers because of his greediness, and Slim who is in much better circumstance than all others due to his wisdom to withstand himself. Steinbeck demonstrates how those who do not realize they have to restrain themselves towards power above their ability will be more destructive than those who do.
Lennie is rejected by everyone at the ranch, except George, because of his mental disability (“Of Mice and Men” 248). People with a mental disability are often looked down upon in society. Lennie is a very large, strong man, however, people on the ranch don't believe he is a good worker because of his disability. Although Lennie has a mental disability, he has the strength to do a lot of the ranch work and is a very good worker. The men on the ranch do not realize the strength that Lennie has until he breaks Curley’s hand and ends up killing Curley’s wife. Having a disability does not imply that the individuals aren’t skilled in different areas. Handicapped by his lack of adult intelligence, Lennie is doomed in the world of a migrant worker (“Of Mice and Men” 246). He is not able to think as highly as an average adult and often times does not make the best decisions. In the novel, we are able to see the strength that Lennie has and how he is not able to control it when Steinbeck talks about how Lennie killed the mouse, the puppy, Curley’s wife and crushed Curley’s hand. Curley is a small man who tends to pick fights with the bigger men to show his strength. Curley knows about Lennie's lack of intelligence and decides to start hitting him. Lennie doesn’t do anything back until George tells him to fight back. The next punch Curley threw, Lennie caught it and squeezed Curley's hand
In the novella Of Mice and Men, the author John Steinbeck argues that earned power is more respected than inherited power. Throughout the story, a power hierarchy is established among the characters. The top of the hierarchy is mostly made up of characters with inherited power, like Curley. Curley is the boss’s son, and gets his power because his father owns the ranch: “Don’t tell Curley I said none of this. He’d slough me. He just don’t give a dam. Won’t ever get canned ‘cause his old man’s the boss” (27). Since Curley has direct power from the most important figure on the ranch, he has the ability to boss around the workers with no consequences. He takes advantage of this power, and the workers cannot retaliate otherwise, they will get
People got power because they got money. People that don’t got no money have less power.in John Steinbeck Of Mice and Men we also see people with different level of power. In the novel Curley and the Boss and Lennie all have different source of power. In mice and man the the character is the boss he deals with a lot of money. The money help the boss get workers to work for him without the money the worker will leave him.
Curley is the bosses son which automatically gives him power. All he has to do is tell his father about someone and they will be hanged or kicked off the ranch. Even though curley is the bossś son that power is wasted if he can keep his image up. Power is Mice and Men when George and Lennie are first introduced to Curley someone says,¨Thatś the bosś son, he said quietly.
If the men were to get in trouble, they would be at risk of being beat by Curley or at risk with the chance of losing their job. Curley’s wife finds Lennie alone in the barn and says, “What you got there, sonny boy?’ Lennie glared at her. ‘George says I ain’t to have nothing to do with-talk to you or nothing.’ (Steinbeck, 86)” This demonstrates one of many examples where Curley’s wife is directly ostracized amongst the farmers. When being in an environment where you can only speak to your husband, it is not particularly surprising that you would want to socialize with other outside of him. Despite Lennie’s mental disability, even he knows that it is forbidden to speak to Curley’s wife in fear of getting George and/or Curley upset. As Curley’s wife tries to start conversation, Lennie steps in and says, “Well I ain’t supposed to talk to you or nothing.’ ‘I get lonely,’ she said. ‘You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. (Steinbeck, 87)” As previously mentioned, Lennie still realizes and understands the consequences for
Of Mice and Men is a novel but not an exceedingly long one. Because of the details that it packs into its pages, the characters are not immensely evolved. You know the story is allegorical because its characters are based on ideas. John Steinbeck made his characters simply ideas in human form more or less. Steinbeck had done this to make a short but effective story (effective in the sense of morals and description). The characters all represent basic ideas and they play a part in the moral. Curley’s anger caused him to keep his wife away from the farmhands. She then became lonely and went to talk to Lennie the innocent. Because of his stupidity and her loneliness she was killed and Curley’s anger was directed at Lennie. George’s caring and love for Lennie forced him to kill Lennie himself to save him from Curley’s hatred
He is black, old, and very lonely and discriminated against. Crooks shows powerlessness because he doesn’t stand up for himself, “Cause I’m black.” (68), this was very big back then. Blacks were segregated, and there was a lot of racism in the 1930s. This shows how he is isolated from the men, and also powerless because he can’t do anything about it because of the time period. He has been on the ranch for miles but he was the only black man, “There wasn’t no colored family for miles around.” (70) He is powerless because he isn’t able to do what he would like. There are no people like him around so he can’t stand up to himself if someone were to say or do something to him. When Lennie goes to see Crooks, he is very surprised someone is nice to him but when Crooks starts talking, “Jus’ talks, an’ you don’t understand nothing.” (71), he doesn't know how to talk to someone lower than he is. He feels very powerless and he is trying to make it seem like he isn’t so he starts putting down Lennie and being mean to him, so it feels like he isn’t so powerless, like he has an important voice. When he starts talking about George,“S’ pose george don’t come back no more.” (71), Crooks is very lonely so maybe by him saying this is making him feel powerful. I also think that this quote would mean that maybe if Crooks says that George isn’t coming back, maybe Lennie will forget George and want to be friends with Crooks and he will finally have a someone and he will feel like he has power because he isn’t alone. When Curley’s wife comes to visit the guys when the others are in town the argument starts to become intense, “You know what i could do?” (80), she says this because Crooks stood up for himself but it backfired. It shows that against a woman, he is also powerless and he won’t stick up for himself. He will let anyone walk all over him and say anything because he can’t step up and stop
Georges power is that he knows a lot about the world. He knows what could be a potential danger, and this is what makes him powerful over Lennie. This power helps him and Lennie get work and jobs. Lennie is powerful because he is so strong. Lennie's power doesn't help him because his strength gets him in lots of trouble.
Of Mice And Men: Prejudice, Barriers and Powerlessness How could power be used in such a way that it hurts other people and yourself? The novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, is about two people, Lennie and George, who are trying to find a job to accomplish their dreams. The two of them get a job and into a lot of conflict within the job and workers.
The book Of Mice and Men, there are several themes. One of them are consisting of the strong vs weak. Of the many characters, protagonists and antagonists, Lennie and George are some of the most used in the book. Lennie and George are an example of strong vs weak. The strong are the people who strive and don’t give up just because of someone else. The weak are the people that live by the basics of life or just to get by. In some cases, George is the strong one while Lennie is the weaker one, but sometimes it’s vice versa.
When Curley’s wife, suspecting the truth about her husband’s injury, begins toying with Lennie, she replicates Curley’s error of judgment by failing to understand how uncontrollable Lennie’s fear and anger can be. When the taunts begin, Candy and Crooks attempt to intervene, but both are quickly emasculated and rendered powerless by Curley’s wife, who gains what, in retrospect, is clearly a offset-victory . While she has greater say so over Candy and threaten Crooks with a lynch mob, her insolence and defiance for the workers are ultimately her undoing. She views Lennie as easy prey, she ups the stake and convinces him to stroke her hair. When she has had enough, however, she demands that he stops. Her protest leaves Lennie
