History is full of examples of how power affects people's behaviors towards others. Well known examples in history include Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler. Kim Jong-Il, Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein are more recent examples of the negative abuse of power. In the novella Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, a common theme throughout the story is the misuse of power. Steinbeck uses the characters Curley’s wife and Crooks to teach the reader that people who possess less power are treated in a more demeaning fashion, but also treat others the same way in search of gaining power.
Curley shows how he uses his strength and position to achieve his desire to dominate the working men that he considers to be a threat due to their size; Lennie being a clear example. It is due to Curley’s lack of height that his desire for dominance and control derives from.
Power had a huge part on how people were treated back in the times of slavery. In the novel Kindred by Octavia E. Butler, an African-American woman named Dana traveled between the 1800s and the present to help her great-grandfather throughout his life while also trying to shape him into a better person in the racist society that he was in. One of the things she noticed was how power could dictate how people lived their lives, especially since slavery was prevalent in the area her great grandfather, Rufus Weylin, lived in. Dana, Rufus, and Alice were all characters whose power affected how their lives turned out and the choices that they made.
The problem with Lennie was that he was mentally disabled, back in the 1930's people did not understand things like that, and had no clue about disabled people. Lennie was sweet and loved thing that were soft. Lennie would put himself in very dangerous situations and with disability he lacked the capacity to control himself physically. Lennie did not understand how strong he was and they damage he would do until after the fact. He also shares the dream of having the small farm and tending to his small rabbit hutch. Since Lennie is mentally disabled he depends on George for almost everything. Lennie is like a small child that has to a have a parent nearby always or he will get into
Lennie, the strongest character (physically) can Buck barley and is a very good worker but is not very bright. Even though Lennie is physically stronger than everyone he is mentally challenged and needs help from everyone to live. In OMAM, George is like Lennie’s caretaker. Lennie doesn't know his own strength and doesn't know how to control himself. Because of that, Lennie ends up killing one of Slim's puppies and killing Curly's wife by snapping her neck. George tries to protect Lennie by telling him to go to the bush where George tells him to hide if anything happens. When Curly goes looking for Lennie, George knows that he will be found and that he will be killed. George goes ahead of the little sure party and finds Lennie and shoots him in the back of the head while he's daydreaming about the farm that he and George were going to have. Slim comes up to him and says “you did what you had to do.” George sacrifices Lennie not only for the greater good of other people, but also to save Lennie.
In the novel Of Mice and Men very few characters have power over others, but the ones that do show it throughout the story. Curley being the bossś son has power over everyone in the ranch and no one dares to cross him. Curleyś wife is automatically given power by branching off of curley's power. She also gains power through her own little tricks. George doesn't have much power, but he does have power over Lennie.
George killed Lennie because Slim was looking for him to shoot him the the gut so he could watch him suffer so George shot him the head so he didn’t have to suffer. George should not have killed Lennie because Lennie is disabled, they could have ran and hid somewhere, they may come after George now that he has killed Lennie
Social power is “the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events.” In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, the strong attack the weak and the weak attack weaker. George obtains great power over Lennie because Lennie is incompetent of making his own decisions. In addition, Slim, the wisest character in this novel has power because he is the most respected by all the workers on the ranch. Lastly, Curley holds power in the novel mainly because he is the bosses son, therefore, he has the power to run the ranch. George, Slim and Curley all posses social power in Of Mice and Men resulting in them overruling another character or characters in this novel.
“Slim said “ya hadda George, I swear ya hadda”.”(Pg. 107) It was clear by the end of the book that George only had one way to protect Lennie from his problems, which were rapidly increasing. “And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie’s head. The hand should violently but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger.”(Pg. 106) Only one thing stood in between Curly and Lennie, and that was George. Even though George treats Lennie kindly and with an open heart, his image portrayed to the other characters was still a small fighter.
From the beginning of the book we can see that Lennie is an interesting character due to his mental disability. He is a huge, powerful character but he is also very innocent. He seems to have grown up physically but not mentally. In the book George says Lennie is ‘just like a kid’. This is very true because he takes orders from George, he asks George a lot of questions
