What kind of challenges do you anticipate in implementing solutions locally? Educate people to become active in bettering our neighborhoods. There are crimes being committed in the communities and the communities keep quiet. When a crime happens no one reports since they’re in fear what may happen to them. The communities need to know that they have a voice that needs to be heard.
Due to these apparent successes, the problem-focused approach has been used to address a diverse array of problems such as gangs, drugs, school crime and the management of police call for service in urban, suburban and even rural communities. The exploration of possible responses to a problem is handled by police officers. Once a problem is identified, officers are expected to work closely with the community members to develop a solution, which can include a wide range of alternatives to arrest. These may focus on the offender, the community, the environment, outside agencies, or the need for some kind of mediation. Problem-oriented policing grew out of twenty years of research into police practices, and differs from traditional policing strategies in many significant ways. For example, problem-oriented policing enables police agencies to be more effective. Currently, police agencies commit most of their time to responding to calls for service. Problem-oriented policing offers a more effective strategy by addressing the
City Heights East is divided by many different ethnicities. There is 54.3% Hispanic, 20.9% Asian, 15% Black, 7.3% White, 2.2% mixed, and 0.3% other. With this data we can see that there is is range of different ethnicities and not one fully overrides other. This is a diverse community with some great cultures throughout. With this comes crime. With a total of about 30 assaults in the past year, there needs to be a sense of community rather than a sense of territory. Within this sections it will review the cost of living, the employment rates, the school’s, and the community organization. These are all important when looking at a specific crime and how to improve it within the community.
Community policing has evolved to be the most used strategy for policing. “It is an approach to crime detection and prevention that provides police officers and supervisors with new tools for addressing recurrent problems that plague communities and consume a majority of police agency time and resources” (Peak, 2012, 65). It has been defined by various people differently. But all the definitions have similar principles (Chappell, 2009). They focus on proactive problem solving and create relationships with the community to address any issue that may arise. Community policing is a combination of client-oriented and problem-oriented policing.
Law Enforcement within the United States is limited as many people may feel that it is a dangerous job. With law enforcement being so limited there is one way the community can and has assisted throughout the years. Community policing is the system of allocating police officers to particular areas so that they become familiar with the local inhabitants. In other words community policing allows law enforcement to be at high profile areas while the community who chooses to be involved is the eyes and ears for law enforcement. In other words were there is crime the community will
The people in places like Baltimore have invented their own economy, one that relies on illegal trade, in order to stay afloat. The people have learned to live with their poverty and crime is generally their easiest solution. Rules must always be adapted so that a society can reasonably follow them, and a government must be seen as there to protect rather than to display its power. The government needs to be aware of a city’s condition and react with haste when it is in trouble; areas like the streets of Baltimore have been in turmoil for far too long, and their problems are slowly coming to a head. Programs such as those listed in the back of The Other Wes Moore are a great start to improve the conditions in Baltimore and other suffering cities, and the government’s focus should be on creating a better future for places like Baltimore rather than simply sustaining the current abhorrent conditions that have been present for far too long.
Jersey City is home to over 257,342 people and it is the community that I have lived in for 17 years. Recently, a problem that has occurred in this area is the level of crime rate and how innocent people such as, active police officers and other bystanders are effected. However, schools are also being effected because it seems to be that students have easy access to heavy weaponry which is very dangerous, for example the William L. Dickinson High School student that was shot in the leg. This problem, if not stopped now would have terrible consequences for future generations in our community. If I were to come up with a plan to clean up the streets, I would offer more police patrols in difficult convicted places, curfews with a different timing
One of the biggest potential problems however, is society. Chicago’s government affects violence by creating a disadvantageous environment within communities. Certain areas within Chicago have experienced the brunt of this through the closing of public schools and overall lack of funding. This results in children traveling far distances to school or even families taking time out of their work day to drive their children. Without easily accessible education and the funds for schools to create opportunities to keep children off the streets, children are at a higher risk to participate in anti-social behaviors. Another societal cause results from the stigma that certain Chicago communities are inherently dangerous. Just as a self-fulfilling prophecy may cause an individual diagnosed with schizophrenia to develop schizophrenic symptoms, a public perception that a community is violent may cause individuals within that community to act out
The Scanlon Plan can be used as a major catalyst to turnaround the plant by emphasizing more on productivity. The more they work the faster they roll towards their bonuses; this magical spell is a win-win situation for both the employees and the management. The management can cruise steadily over the wave of bonus motivated productivity and the employees can reap the benefits from the high production rate in terms of bonuses. The plan can be redrawn and a slight change can be made by making the entire plan revolve around the concept of productivity. When productivity assumes a prime position in the plan, employees will strive hard
By resolving the panhandling issue, the major issue, you can also start eliminating some of the smaller problems. Panhandling is a serious crime because they start to harass the residents and steal money from those that have sympathy to there lies. When residents give the panhandlers money, more and more panhandlers will come in the neighborhood to seek out the same opportunities. One thing that police officers can do is meet with the residents so that they can voice their opinion about the rundown homes in the community. At this time they can also seek any suggestions on how to correct the problem. The first thing for officers to do is search these homes for squatters and criminal. They should be check to see if they have any warrants. If no warrants they are
Since the founding of the United States, the responsibility for enforcing laws has been given to state and local governments. The biggest strength that this distribution of power has granted is that the citizens can have a connection to their officers because they are feeling that they are being policed by one of their own. This keeps the law, law enforcement, and your connection to it close as opposed to (only) having it enforced by entities who do not know your area or the people that live in the area. Along similar lines, local policing provides the opportunity to build relationships with the people they serve, which can go a long way in reducing crime. Despite these two strengths, the biggest weakness is that local law enforcement agencies can, and often are both underfunded and understaffed, preventing the agency from being able to combat crime and help their communities to the level that they wish. The other big weakness to local law enforcement is that due to there being so many localities (most with their own law enforcement agencies), there can be some confusion to the overlap of jurisdictions. The alternative to local policing, which has been gaining some steam in the United States since the start of the 21st century, is placing the responsibility for law
The same could be said here. Neighborhood canvassing is a long, drawn-out, boring process that everyone would rather avoid. Going from house to house, business to business, talking to people who saw nothing, would rather not be involved, or just don’t want to talk to the police can be a thankless job. However, it is the basic skills that solve crimes. Therefore, I feel an intervention that would help clearance rates would be organized and accountable programs for canvassing. Included in this program would be an educational portion showing how to effectively interview those who are reluctant or those who feel they saw nothing but may know more than they think. Also included in this program would be the reasons why this method is effective and, because who doesn’t like stories, examples where canvassing solved the crime and caught the criminal, as well as examples where canvassing would have solved the crime if only a department would have dedicated the personnel. Once departmental training had occurred, I would ensure that a system of checks and balances is in place. Every contact, or lack thereof, would need a report. These reports would be filed in a central location where everyone involved in the case would have access. This way an officer can see if an area was canvassed or if someone wasn’t home at a location then they could attempt another contact. Additionally, officers would need to continue attempting contact until contact with someone at the location was made. There would be a ranking officer ultimately responsible for the canvassing section, both ensuring that reports were correctly filled out and filed and that any incomplete reports were followed up on.
In Chattanooga the issue is growing and we need to take action. The Violence Reduction Initiative is a long term solution to an immediate problem. The violence is as high as its ever been, with over 20 gang related homicides a year There are an abundance of gang members attempting to escape the tyranny in their neighborhoods and all we have to do is present them with the opportunity. Maybe this solution will give the push this city needs, or at least clean up the streets long enough for the VRI to start showing
Document evidence of the problem, including data on the scope or level of the problem. You may use public records of community level indicators and/or community surveys.
Having control of guns would stop a lot of violence in many communities. Enforce better gun laws and requirements would change how many people have access to illegal weapons. Early disciplinary actions in the youth would show the youth that committing crimes will not get them far in life. Showing youth other activates and opportunities that would be beneficial to their lives would stop youth crimes. If communities trusted law enforcement more they would look to resolve issues and not take it into their own hands. Building a bond between communities and law enforcement can reduce a lot of crimes. Law enforcement has to let their communities know they support and help them. Rebuilding the bond with law enforcement would make it easy for the
We have many people who are willing to become trained volunteers and children that want to participate and sign up with our after school programs. We are slightly worried about the neighborhood crime rate still. This issue will be our hardest to combat and we know we will have to take our time if we want to see a real change. We are willing and ready to go full force and do what is necessary, but we also realize that this will take time.
