The AHSAA (Alabama High School Athletic Association) reports that a total of 90 home-school students have joined junior and high school athletic teams during the 2016-17 school year, with only 13 playing the marquee sport of football. Homeschooled kids should be allowed to play in public school sports. Everyone should be allowed a chance to prove themselves, no matter what. 6th graders should be allowed to participate in school sports just as 7th and 8th graders. Reasons we should participate in school sports are, kids can get even more fit and strong than just being in gym, another one is people can challenge each other in competitions, my final one is that children can be incredibly better along with teamwork and leadership. Competitive sports are a huge part of our culture with 40 million kids participating in them today. There is a long standing debate of whether kids should play competitive sports. People argue about whether they are beneficial, or if they actually hurt kids. I strongly believe that kids should participate in competitive sports because of the many benefits it has. These benefits include physical fitness, better behavior, life lessons and skills, mentors and friends, and countless others. Children can keep these many lessons with them for their entire lives.
The aspects of the argument of whether or not our nation is full of wimps is that some would say that children need to be supervised at all times, and having parents that actually care enough to be a part of their child’s academics and after school activities is very slim. On the other hand, some would also say that sports are not as important as your child’s health. Some parents should learn to just let their child have fun, and monitor their academics to make sure that they are on track. Let kids be kids, and set the path for their own future. Even after reading the article, I still stand with my original opinion. Should my children want to play a sport because they have a love for the game, then I will not stand in the way. That is not to say, though, that I will not step in if there are serious injuries.
