Is “Hamlet” really mad? In Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’
Introduction
H amlet, not likely seems to be mad because madness is one of the psychological diseases which emits out your all logical thoughts leaving a human with no particular conception of what is really happening around them. Undoubtedly, Hamlet used Proactive approach while adopting antic disposition and frivolous behavior around the Claudius, Polonius, Ophelia and Gertrude to uncover the secret of his father’s death and loyalty of his friends. On the contrary, he displayed logical, rational, sane behavior around Horatio and some of his bosom friends.

True madness is an illness that inhibits the mind of an individual & assumes the total control of thought & action within that person. It is not the condition that flourishes only when called upon or that can be completely disregarded if the host wishes to ignore it.
In this play, Hamlet is introduced as the sad protagonist. He has just returned from school & has been apprised that his father is dead, his uncle, Claudius has taken his mother’s hand in marriage.
As Hamlet says,
“Oh, that this too, too sullied flesh would melt, Thaw and resolve itself into dew, or that the Everlasting had not fixed his canon against self-slaughter! O God, God!” (Act 1, scene 2, lines 131-134).
In the above lines, Hamlet is thinking about committing suicide but cannot do because of his religion. At this movement in the play, I believe his actions are reasonable as he is angry about his father’s death and about his “new” father.
Hamlet is not truly insane because whenever he is pretending to be mad, everything he says has a hidden meaning. This is seen when he talks to Polonius:
“Ay sir. To be honest, as this world goes, is to be one/man picked out of ten
