In the article “Driving to the Funeral” the author Anna Quindlen addresses the issue of the age to begin driving. She believes that the age 16 is far too young teenagers to begin driving. Driving at a too young of an age is one big reason that the way majority of teenagers die is because of automobile accidents. There isn’t enough limitations on young drivers, causing safety concerns. Parents shouldn’t allow their children to drive at such a young age, just because they want their kids to have “freedom and responsibility”.

In contrast, many believe that 16 years old is old enough to operate a motor vehicle. Many minors living with their parents face punishments, such as suspension of driving privileges, if they get a ticket or in a collision. They fear losing the ability to drive the family car if they break traffic laws, and often decide to obey the laws rather than be punished. In addition, teens need transportation to their jobs, classes, various entertainment venues, sports practices and competitions. Parents often lack the time to chauffeur the young adults to and from these places. Driving is imperative to teenage life. The ability to drive allows a teenager to be less dependent on their parents and more able to take on additional responsibilities. Without driving privileges, teens would not be able to get to the destinations previously listed.

There are about 2,000,000 sixteen year old drivers in United States, meaning that almost 2,000,000 million people depend on the current driving age for many things. Having a license at age 16 gives that person opportunities they wouldn’t be able to have without the freedom a car gives, such as getting a job that could help their family, driving themselves to school or sports practice if their parents can’t or being able to see their friends when they want. Having your license at 16 also gives teens a taste of independence and responsibility. The driving age has to stay at sixteen because teens and families depend on it for many things and it introduces a sense of responsibility for the teen.

In 2013, more than 2,500 teenagers died in the United States from motor vehicle crash injuries. Such injuries are by far the leading public health problem for young people 13-19 years old (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety [IIHS], 2014). Drivers are not the only ones at risk. Teenagers who are passengers in others vehicles make up a startling 87% of the fatality statistic. Lack of driving experience, disregard for traffic laws, and quick access to full driving privileges contribute to teen death. To reduce teen driving fatalities, successful completion of driver education classes provided by public and private schools should be mandatory for all teenagers prior to receiving their driving permit.

I am going to state my opinion and Facts about why the driving age should stay at 16 years old. The driving age should stay at 16 years old because it lets teenagers have freedom,it lets them help their parents out, and it also helps with transportation.If the driving age gets raised up to 18 years old then a lot of people are going to get mad.If the driving age changes then they are taking away the life 16 year old have been waiting for their whole live. Due to state safety concerns many states have raised the minimum legal age to drive. The state of Virginia, which is where I live, is now thinking of doing the same. This state should be looked at with careful consideration. The state of Virginia will look at all reasons why it should not be raised before coming to a conclusion. In secondary school, kids have a couple of choices of getting the chance to class: having their guardians drive them, taking the transport, or driving themselves. The most simple alternative is for them to drive themselves to class. Being an authorized driver is a gigantic obligation and is expected to show youthful understudies how to handle obligation.

I feel that when you are 16 you should be able to drive. When you are 16, it is almost everyone's dream to drive. We don’t need any irresponsible accidents, but 16 is a mature age. If you take the right class; study and learn, then it you should be just fine. When you are a 16, you want to be more independent. Independence comes with responsibility. I’m sure your parents don’t want to drive you around everywhere.

When driving at the age of sixteen, teenagers can have more freedom to do the things they want. When I turned sixteen and received my license, I could finally do the things a teenager could only dream of. I was finally able to start off my dating life by going on long dates without having to worry about my parents or other guardians. Most kids out in the country may have to drive to get to there school or social events mabe even their friends house. Another example could be that some people have a lot of siblings so parents have to run from place to place to picking up and dropping off their children. A solution to their problem may be allowing their teen to start using the driving privilege they will be able to help out parents and go places for them self without having to stress their parents by having them run from place to place
