Love conquers all, or at the very least, that’s what many romance novels want people to believe. A Secret Sorrow by Karen van der Zee, which tells the tale of Faye and her struggle to commit to Kai after an accident leaves her unable to reproduce, is a perfect example of this. “The Sorrowful Woman” by Gail Godwin, on the other hand, is a dark fairy tale about a woman whose life is only made worse by marriage and motherhood. At first glance, these stories may seem completely different. On further examination, A Secret Sorrow and “A Sorrowful Woman” share both similarities and differences in tone, theme, and gender roles that lead to the latter story being a much better piece of literature.
Every haunted house usually has a sad or treacherous past. Lemp Mansion is no exception. Day after day, we would pass the mansion building on our way to and from school. Branches of vines and clusters of moss crawled up the sides of the building. I could see the paint, tearing off the walls. People for years have said the mansion building is haunted, but I don’t believe it. They say people have been possessed and killed there. Olivia, of course, believes every detail anyone tells him. To teach him a lesson, we decided to plan to spend the night in the mansion building this Saturday.

Located on the grounds of Roanoke College’s campus is the reportedly haunted house known as Monterey. This house was built in 1853 by the Huff family, over time passed through many different owners, and in 2002 was officially bought by Roanoke College. Throughout the history of the house several of the occupants are known to have died within the premises of the property, thus contributing to it’s reputation of being haunted. In our investigation of the Monterey house we spent two nights in the house gathering various types of data to aid us in our attempt to discover what theory of haunting is consistent with the experiences within the house.

What remains of the family that used to live in the house are their shadows as they died
The haunting then started to revolve more around daughter, Betsy. Mental Floss states that the family would hear strange tapping and faint singing, identified as an old woman. The children's blankets and pillows were tugged
The Greek Revival two-story mansion with double galleries surrounded by colonnades would have been impressive. As it appeared today, it was extremely run down and dreary.
The story “The Haunting of Hill House” written by Shirley Jackson and “Rose Red” by Steaven King have many similar things that happen. In Mark 16.3-4, there is some discussion about who is going to move the stone, and then they realize that the stone has already been moved. Luke also finds the stone rolled back once they approach. Matthew has a completely different version of the removal of the stone. In Matthew 28.2, there was a great earthquake and an angel came down from heaven, rolled back the stone and sat down on the stone. Mark and Luke leave some mystery in the removal of the stone, while Matthew describes an act of divine intervention which removes the stone. The accounts of what was in the tomb are varying extremely from gospel to gospel.
