The purpose of this quality improvement study was to evaluate nurses’ perceptions on the use of communication boards for non-English speaking patients, primarily Spanish and Russian speaking patients.

Choosing a major can be difficult, especially when considering expanding your collegiate career from your undergraduate career. For myself, Speech-Language Pathology was a clear answer for me to pursue, especially since I have a desire to help change an individual’s life and make a substantial impact that can affect more then just one individual. From the start of my Speech-Language Pathology collegiate career, I have always been drawn to working with children and increasing their communication skills. Although, my passion for working with children does not stop with expanding their communication skills, but also to help them to become more confident and content with whom they are.

The first time I realized I was different was in second grade, when I opened my mouth to answer a question and my peers giggled as I struggled to answer. I pronounced my R's like W's, which threw my whole pronunciation of the English language into a twist. My previously "adorable" lapses in speech were now affecting me negatively. I was different than the rest of my classmates; I had been born with a speech disorder.

Allergic Reactions – If the individual is allergic to something and has a bad reaction it is important be able to detect what and how much the individual has been eating/drinking as soon as possible as this information may have to be passed over to the GP

The EDUX 9930 class allowed me the flexibility to choose a topic that was specific to speech pathology. I used the hours of class time to catch up on the most recent research completed through the American Speech and Hearing Association, watch in-services on multiple speech related courses, and listen to webinars that addressed disabilities that affected speech skills. It is important for speech pathologist to stay current with evidence-based practices that will help students make the most progress in the shortest amount of time. I work with students in kindergarten through fourth grade so several of the topics that I focused on were in depth articles on phonological awareness and reading during the primary grades. I chose this topic because I’m interested in studying speech language pathology or audiology in college and I don’t know much about it, so I wanted to take this opportunity to learn as much as I could about this subject. “Speech Pathologists require significant formal education”. “..Sometimes called speech therapists, assess, diagnose, treat and help to prevent disorders related to speech”. I also chose this topic because my cousin is hard of hearing, which caused her to have learning disabilities and fall behind in school but she took speech therapy to help improve her interactions with people and to help her get further in her educational career. She also uses American Sign Language and she now attends The School for the Deaf

Communication is a two way process which allows us to express our thoughts and feelings to others, while allowing us in turn to understand what others are trying to convey to us. Communication involves speech and language (verbal) as well as facial expression, gesture and body language (non-verbal). Communication is an essential life skill for children and young people and it underpins their social, emotional and educational development. (Bercow 2008)

One challenge an individual may face is communication problems, so as we get older we start to lose our eyesight and our hearing weakens, we will become much more hesitant when we talk. Other things can affect the way we can communicate e.g. Maria’s mother has dementia and is a 1st generation immigrant from Italy, therefore she can only speak Italian; and has forgotten how to speak English. This will make it hard for her mother to communicate with service providers if she’s placed in a nursing home, as they will not be able to understand what she’s saying; which will be a problem as there may be aspects about her mother that needs to be vitally known. Furthermore, her mother will have a hard time negotiating with her support workers that’ll come help during the night.

Per OJIN, expected obesity-related issues are as those such as “skin, pulmonary, resuscitation, drug absorption, intravenous access, and mobility”. The above described anticipated issues impact the nursing profession and it’s administration of holistic care because of unexpected events or lack of knowledge caring for these issues.

Spoken language The second type of communication is spoken language. Spoken language is a way of interacting using oral ways (The Free Dictionary, 2014). There are two different types of spoken language that are used these are formal and informal.

Communication is very crucial in life, especially in education. Whether it be delivering a message or receiving information, without the ability to communicate learning can be extremely difficult. Students with speech and language disorders may have “trouble producing speech sounds, using spoken language to communicate, or understanding what other people say” (Turkington, p10, 2003) Each of these problems can create major setbacks in the classroom. Articulation, expression and reception are all essential components for communication. If a student has an issue with articulation, they most likely then have difficulty speaking clearly and at a normal rate (Turkington, 2003). When they produce words, they
