Diabetes is a very well known disorder and serious illness. Also, Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism and the way our bodies use digested food for growth and energy. There are three types of diabetes, these include Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and Gestational diabetes (Bernstein). There are many factors that play into the development of this disease such as with Type 1 diabetes it is a disease that affects the way your body uses food. This type of diabetes is usually found in children as well as young adults, it can also be known as juvenile diabetes. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy when women’s glucose levels are impaired due to all the hormonal changes. This causes their blood sugar to possibly be higher than usual but not necessarily high enough to have diabetes. Gestational diabetes can affect the fetus during pregnancy causing the child to possibly have birth defects or the mother having a miscarriage. Diabetes is a life-long disease marked by elevated levels of sugar also known as glucose, in the blood. It can be caused by too little insulin, a resistance to insulin, or both (Bernstein). Most of the food we eat is broken down into glucose, the form of sugar in the blood. Glucose is the main source of fuel for the body. After digestion, glucose passes into the bloodstream, where it is used by cells for growth and energy. For glucose to get into cells, insulin must be present. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach. Insulin is produced in the pancreas, an organ that sits behind your stomach (Sylvia). Diabetes is a disease that can be deadly if not treated correctly. Most people with diabetes have one of the two types and can be treated There are multiple ways to take care of yourself or others who have diabetes.
