Explosion: The Cassiopeia Constellation

In today's society, constellations are known as a group of stars that when viewed from our planet earth, form a pattern that we can see at night with the unaided eye. There are also groups of constellation families; such as the Ursa major family, the Perusues Family, the Hercules Family, the Orion Family, the Bayer Group, the Heavenly Waters, the La Caille Family and finally the most known constellation group; the Zodiacal Family. The zodiacal family consists of the zodiac constellations signs. These signs usually describe your personality and who you are as a family. Orion is my favorite constellation because it is one of the easiest to find and most recognizable. This makes it one of the most popular constellations. Orion's belt includes the three brightest stars in the sky. In the Northern Hemisphere, Orion is a fall and winter constellation, visible from November to February. One of Orion's "stars" is actually a nebula, the Orion nebula.

One of the most familiar constellations in the night sky aside from the Big and Little Dipper is Orion, the Hunter. Made identifiable by the three bright stars that make up "Orion's Belt", Orion is easily recognized throughout the world due to the convenient position upon the celestial equator, allowing the constellation to be seen from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. I chose this constellation as my favorite because it was, in fact, one of the first myths that I had ever learned, and also because it was the easiest constellation that I was able to find from my Constellation Atlas as a child. My favorite constellation by far is the Gemini constellation. The Gemini constellation is my favorite because my star sign is Gemini. And it is fairly easy to spot in the night sky, although the best viewing month is in February.

As a little girl, I would look up at the stars. I had been taught about many constellations, but I would always look for a certain one. Orion. Orion had been my favorite since I had learned about him. I never understood why. I tried to bring myself to love Pegasus, but I never could. Nothing appealed to me like Orion did. Something about the great hunter struck me. Since then I have loved him. I always look for him. In Greek mythology, Orion is a hunter. In fact, there are many legends containing Orion. Orion would wear a magic lion skin that would protect him from harm. He wielded a club of bronze and went about vanquishing evil creatures. In many legends, Orion is born and killed rather quickly. He dies by accident or dies on purpose.

The constellation Sagittarius, also known as 'The Archer' in Latin, is fascinating. Research done on this cluster of stars shows that it was documented in the second century by a Greek astronomer named Ptolemy. Sagittarius is the fifteenth largest constellation overall, it occupies eight hundred sixty-seven square degrees and contains the most stars with known planets. This cluster of stars is in the center of the Milky Way galaxy. The brightest stars in the constellation come together to form a pattern of stars called the Teapot. The myth behind the stars is what lead me to my ultimate decision to choose Sagittarius.

The constellation I have chosen to write about is Orion. This is one of the most famous constellations in the night sky. I chose this one because as I stated, it is very famous, and because it is one of those constellations that I have seen many times. On March 4, 1769, Charles Messier inducted the Orion Nebula, M42, into his list of stellar objects. Then, in 1771, Messier released his list of objects for its first publication in Memoires de l'Academie.1
