Will extending the school day really help? If they do raise the time for school, that extra time should go towards our lunch. Sometimes some people like to come home and rest. This might not be possible if the school day is almost 10 hours. How would you feel if you come to school at 8:15 A.M., and end at 8:15 P.M. and still have to come home and do homework not to mention teachers would give you more homework due to a long time able to teach 3 different things, ending at about 10 or 11 o’clock? I would feel pretty angry if you ask me. Sometimes there are also farms that children must live on and work for. If you come home at 8:15 P.M. it’s already dark and you can not work anymore. Then many schools will lose money due to parents taking
School days should start later in the day because there are many benefits to doing so. Such as improved grades, Test scores, and safer roads because teens won’t be as drowsy if they sleep 8 plus hours.
This proposal and concern though is not something only New Jersey students and educators are facing. Across the state education boards are contemplating the same decision and echo many of the same concerns. The top on everyones list is budget. This is an exuberant cost, that many states like new Jersey cannot afford. Several of the articles discussed the aspect of cost, from electricity, to janitorial services, to adding additional meals and meals cost, along with salary and supplies. Cost are estimated to be “$1,200 per student, per year for most school districts” (Sanders, A., 2014). Schools in each district are looking for a “six to severn percent” financial increase for for a simple ten minuets of increased time (Anderson, M., 2014 )
If we were able to get out of school four days earlier, then they would not pay for school lunches. School lunches are very expensive. They can work on saving money by school funding. They can buy more food and put it in the storage. They wouldn’t have to pay for the lunch ladies. That is why school lunches can save us money.
Kids shouldn’t be trying to cramp everything when they get home from school. And what I mean by this is that a kid should be able to do their homework, have time to chill, eat, then head to sleep. They can’t do the things they would normally do after they get home from school because they got homework or have to head straight to sleep for them to get the rest that they need. Schools shouldn’t start later because there are kids with jobs, sports/after school activities, and they are tired when they get home. One reason why schools shouldn't start later is if a high school student gets an after school job, they will not be able to attend their job.
For example, after school if you had football practice for 2 hours, then you have homework to do, and then you had to study. You would also not get to eat dinner with your family. It is also the same problem to teachers, too. The teachers stay at the school for an extra hour, so when they leave, it would be darker and later. This proves why schools should not start
Many parents and students believe that school starts too early,I agree with them school hours should be pushed back. But some may argue why would this be necessary,or what can this change affect them. This change is beneficial for the students,in many ways such as conduct, grades, and tardies that is why pushing back school one hour will help and I will tell you how.
As a senior in high school, I go to school from 8am to 3 p.m. every weekday, then go to work from 4p.m. to 9 or 10 p.m. most nights. Then I’m expected to come home and do two to three hours of homework and get enough sleep to to do it all over again? With school pushed back an hour or more, it would provide more sleep time and allow more time to do homework before school.
So first the reason would be affected because after school activities would be moved later, but if school ends at five then do you want your kid to be at school till six or seven if not then this would not help. For example, census.gov says, 57% of kids participate in activities after school that means over half of the school will be there till 7:00 or 6:00 and if there are 79,423. Now is that fair to teachers and staff because they stay a little later to finish up anyways and how little they are paid is just not fair for them to not see their family. So again, I take into consideration my life and others my mom is a teacher so I would never see her and other families would care about this reason just as much as anything
Parents argue that later school times can disrupt their schedules, and cause them to go into work later than usual. This is not the case however, according to the Titus Sharpie, a research scientist of Human Habits and Behaviors at the University of California, Berkeley “the average person working in the US gets to work at 9:00am...and starts work by 9:20am.”(Sharpie). If school times really did start at 8:30, parents could drop their kids off at school and head straight to work. Not to mention, the public transportation such as buses can pick up kids up to 20 minutes before school starts and take them to school on time. Also, parents will end work just as school ends, and be able to pick them up. Buses and after school programs are also available in schools to care for children if parents can’t pick them up in time. School time’s starting later can be a huge improvement to a child’s education while at the same time not disrupting day to day
There is no reason why schools shouldn’t extend the school day. The obvious solution to these problems is just to extend the school day and turn it into the four day week. Changing this can help the students now and the soon to be students by giving them a better learning experience and end up doing better in life in general. The extended school day has been used in some schools across the U.S. and has proven to work just as or better than the normal day. The extended school day will not only affect the lives of the students helping them to succeed it will also better our society if the next generation of workers are well educated and
The school board is considering adding an hour and a half to the school day. The extra hour and a half will cause scheduling problems. This would also cause teachers and students to become more tired. Also, this would cause conflicts with family and activities outside of school. For these reasons, the school board should not be extended the school day by one and a half hours for various reasons.
I am strongly opposed with the Dickenson County school boards plans to extend our school day an extra hour and a half. I do not feel that this extension would help the students in our schools. Our school days are all ready seven hours a day so in addition to this seven hours of school would make it eight and a half hours. Adding this extension would kill us. We would not have near enough time for anything after school. We would have to just focus on our school work and nothing else because we would also be under a lot of stress. That is my reason why that this is a bad idea.
Extending learning time is not a new idea, however, as indicated in the introduction, a school cannot simply add an extra half-an-hour to the day and call that a timetable improvement. This is a tempting option because educational institutions and the Government spend significant portions of their budget on outside of school hours’ care, and expanded school day (days that start before 8:30 or finish after 3:30) or extension classes and specialist study programs appear to use otherwise empty time. In the Australian context, more than 40 weeks and 6 - 7 hours per day (including breaks) would constitute an extended program.
Most people feel tired after a long day of school or work. Well, so do I, and probably most of you, too. How do teachers expect us to get through a seven hour day, with only one forty minute break? Most students suffer a long day at school. Dividing up the recess and breaks would spread the physical activity throughout the day, and would allow the brain to recover after almost every class, so students are ready to learn more. When I went to school in Germany over the summer, there were six classes in a five and a half hour day. There were breaks ranging between five and twenty minutes, depending on the schedule, between every class. Students were able to eat in the cafeteria or outside,
Aside from the difficulty of finding a place within a school, many children are also expected to work and to help provide for their families, as many parents cannot find a job. Many go to school all day, and then work night shifts at restaurants or factories. Many children are often exposed to extremely long working hours, dangerous types of work and many are exposed to illegal activities.
