Assignment 2

Introduction

In research, the concept of validity refers to the accuracy or truth of the research study (Cozby & Bates, 2012). Furthermore, there are three important types of validity, which include external, internal, and construct validity (Cozby & Bates, 2012). The purpose of this paper is to prepare a validity paper based on the prevalence of elder abuse in selected Ohio nursing homes and what, if any, consequences the nursing homes encounter.
Characteristics of External Validity
Researchers tend to draw conclusions and/or generalizations from the sample of participants in order, to generalize about others that are not in the specific study (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008). Therefore, it is essential that researchers learn …show more content…

Now, it is time to give an overview of some of the design threats to construct validity. If the researcher did not define the construct efficiently than it can lead to the inadequate preoperational explication of constructs threat (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008). Next, is the mono-operation bias, which is the use of the study program only one time and one place (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008). Third, the mono-method bias is the use of any one measure or observation (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008). Finally, the confounding constructs and the levels of constructs threat (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008). Overall, this threat to construct validity is a labeling issue like some of the other threats to construct validity (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008). However, there are more design threats than listed in this paper to construct …show more content…

Therefore, it is essential that any validity issues for the envisioned research are minimal. Consequently, with little validity issues and/or threats to the envisioned research topic the study results will be able to be duplicated in other areas, which could result in enhanced elder abuse policies, laws, and/or punishment for the offender and the institution where the abused elder resides. After, reading the assigned chapters on the three different types of validity it seems that the construct validity concept will be the one that may pose the most issues for the envisioned research topic. However, other elder abuse studies have been conducted in institutional settings and a few have used the routine activities theory to obtain study results from a criminological perspective. Therefore, it seems the construct validity requirements and the operationalizations of the constructs correctly will pose the most issues to the envisioned research topic pertaining to elder abuse in selected Ohio nursing homes. Any external threats that may be an issue for the envisioned research can be minimized or excluded by randomly selected nursing homes throughout Ohio that meet specific criteria such as, its size, location, Medicaid/Medicare approved, and type of ownership. As a result, any external threats to the study design will be
