Extracurricular Activities

With a regular schedule for all these students, everyone is expected to simply do the work at home, and come back to school to turn it in and receive more and do the same process over and over. But when there are other activities a child can be involved in, it makes routines have a slight change. Especially if these certain “activities” are being a requirement and not just an option because there are always students who never try new activities and miss out on opportunities. Therefore, students should be offered extracurricular activities in their schools because it gains skills and builds pride to be successful academically in Anaheim. Anaheim High Schools can better student success if the following steps were to take place: expanding classroom time since it has proved to help students gain success, glorify students for their effort rather than their intelligence as it will help them develop a growth mind-set raising their opportunities in becoming triumphant, introducing students into positive extra curricular activities which can help as success influencers. Raising the quantity of time in class would highly improve a great mass of student success at Anaheim High School. One of my most enjoyed extracurricular activities is National Honor Society because it allows me to engage with the community around my school. It also gives me the opportunity to work with people from other grade levels by having projects that require the input of all the members. Usually the meetings are two every month but on special events like the special olympics or winter formal it can change up to 4 every month. One of the events that the group did this year was preparing banners for the special olympics. This small project allowed me to learn more about the special ed group that is on our campus and how there needs to be more effort to integrate them in our school community. In a traditional school, the school schedule seems to drag on when coming up on a winter break or the summer break. During this period many students lose motivation with school and stop trying or start to miss a lot of school. With year round schooling, students only go to school for about 2-3 months before they have a break. WIth these frequent breaks the “schedule might reduce absences because the frequently scheduled breaks allow for sick or exhausted teachers and students to recover and recuperate before returning to school” (Pearson). This allows both teacher and students to feel less burnout through school with the extended breaks throughout the year.

For a student at Anaheim school to be successful, they need the help from the schools. Schools should be able to encourage every student to be success. Not every student is at the same intelligence level so schools need to find a way for them to learn and be great. Anaheim schools can improve student success if the following changes take place: there needs to be longer periods, more school, days, less summer vacation, schools should be able to encourage student to not give up and showing them that effort and determination will help them be successful. How to improve success Imagine going back to school on the first day and get quizzed to see what you still remember from the past school year.

As a student, in Anaheim high school, I am proud to say that this an amazing school, but when it comes to the students graduating it is hard. This is when it comes to applying that we need more time in school. Why do we need more school days and a longer time in school? Well according to the story when we have more time in school we are able to learn more and understand any topic that might come on our way. it would be better if we would have more time in school but not have to be in school all day like in the story. Yeah, it might be the only way a lot of students would have a better life, but it would be killing for the student to be in school.

Some of the extra-curricular activities I am involved in include Science National Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Amnesty International. These three particular activities are helping me shape the person I am today. The amount of work one has to put into these activities reflects the amount of work I will one day put into my future studies and work. In these extra-curricular activities I am expected to participate with my community outside of school. This has and will continue to help me be more social with others, be comfortable working in teams, improve my grades, and be informed about certain happenings.

Have you ever wondered on having a passion for extracurricular activities? Students in Anaheim should take risks in joining something as simple as dance or sports. “ Mad Hot Ballroom” by Marilyn Agrelo teaches us “ Key to success in life and to find something you like and to do it well” (Agrelo). Seeing the children that came from harsh trouble living environment well known as the Bronx New York gave the kids an opportunity to take action not only that but keeping them on the right track which later leads to better futures. “ I'm in the mood for family and school and dancing but i'm not in the mood for boys” (Agrelo). For instance the girls verbalize on having a healthy happy family is key. Meaning parenting is ideal because kids acknowledge boundaries and being supported from their loved one. This change is important in Anaheim schools because it can build relationships with opposite genders and know the meaning in having fun. Students gain actions and receive the opportunity to get involved in something they enjoy.

I participate in multiple athletics and activities at Worland High School. Worland High School has a large array of extracurricular activities that they offer. From Key Club, to Football, to Debate, exedra. All these activities offer many opportunities for the students to participate in. There is a considerably large quantity of students at Worland High School who are involved in these extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities have a lot of benefits. I participate in extracurricular activities for many reasons , the three major ones are, they keep me busy, they are something that I love, and they keep me healthy.

Students aren’t alway prepared to come back to school after a long vacation. In Anaheim schools after students come back from a three months vacation, it takes them a while to get back on a school schedule. Many of the students still have a vacation mindset, which means they’re less likely to do well in first couple weeks of school. Grades tend to be low at the start of a new school year and after winter vacation. After a long vacation it takes student time to get back on track to become successful in school. In order to increase student success at Anaheim schools is to have a mandatory after school study class. In Marita’s Bargain by Malcolm Gladwell, it states “What that extra time does is allow for a more relaxed atmosphere”(10). Extracurricular actives are fun and a good way to talk to friends, but when your principal makes it mandatory that's a different story. The IDEA or International Debate Education Association conducted a study that shows 50% of students and parents are against mandatory extracurricular activities and schools. I feel the decision that has been made is not right and I disagree with it.

Another way to improve student success at Anaheim High School is getting parents and teachers involved, by praising their children and students. Praising your child or student encourages them to succeed more often than pats on the back. Telling stories about a success that results from hard work can be a form of praise. For example,“Talking about math geniuses who were more or less born that way puts students in a fixed mindset”, but “Descriptions of great mathematicians who fell in love with math and developed amazing skills engenders a growth mindset.” In order to increase student success at Anaheim High School is getting parents and teachers involved, by praising their children and students. Praising the individual not only encourages him or her to keep moving forward, but also helps them get the concept that effort is far more important than intelligence or talent. The recent Great Recession has caused many lower and middle income families to have problems with their children graduating and having academic achievement. More funding is going towards academic achievement in lower income schools rather than dividing it up among extracurricular activities like clubs, art programs, and all athletic programs. With more and more pressure going towards test scores and graduation rates, athletic funding is dwindling at rates higher than ever seen before as the funding is going towards improvement in the classroom (“Elliot”). Extracurriculars are beneficial to the student as they keep them out of trouble and students are able to form new friendships while demonstrating their passion or ability (“Smith”).

What do think when you hear student success? Many people think different things. For example, student success could be a student having a good job in something they specialized on, and are living on their own without anybody's help. There are several different ways student succeed and ways to change schools in order for their students to succeed as well in this article. For instance, Anaheim High Schools can improve student success if we have longer school days, make the student be interested in school and on what they are learning, and having more after school programs that interest kids and will keep their minds off of bad things.
