Extra-Curricular Activities: National Honor Society, And Amnesty International

Extracurriculars are there for students to enjoy activities other than their academics, but it is also a way to shows that they can focus on education and outside life at the same time. Some students do not take school seriously enough. Coming to school might just be a way for athletes to participate in the sport they want to. Not every students has exceeding academic skills, however, anyone can succeed if they just try. Being able to multitask will behoove the students in the future. One extracurricular activity that is important to me is volunteering at the Skagit Valley Humane Society. I have always enjoyed being around animals so I decided to volunteer. I can help animals that have lost everything and just need someone to love them. While volunteering I walk the dogs, clean cages or whatever the staff needs me to do. The animals love the attention they get and only want to be loved. This experience made me realize that caring for animals is something I enjoy doing.

Participation can make someone feel more fulfilled in life and can increase their self-esteem by making them feel more capable in the act of doing (Law, 2002, p. 640). In general, participation in extracurricular activities outside of work or school increases quality of life for both children and adults. When children participate in sports or clubs, their risk of smoking, low self-esteem and having difficulty making friends decreases. Adults that volunteer or participate in recreational activities are proven by research to live longer and have higher quality of life. I have been in a few school activities. One of the main activities that I have been involved in is Color guard. Since my sophomore year, I have been on the guard and participating in all of the competitions with the band. It is a great way to get involved, make new friends, and create new experiences. I am also in my school’s National Honor Society which is an organization that consists of the top academic scholars. We do volunteer work and do activities that display integrity. We have done blood drives as well as packaged food for Kids Against Hunger. That is another organization that people can do to help package food for children across seas that don’t have any source of nourishment. I am an active thespian which is a group of sorts that is dedicated to the fine arts. If a researcher wants to determine if a student who participated in extra-curricular activities in high school will have higher grades in college than a student who didn’t, they could see the cause and effect that extra-curricular activities has on a student’s college studies.

I still remember the time in Middle School when I was inducted as a member of NJHS(National Junior Honor Society). It was truly an honor to be accepted such a recognition for my outstanding grades and admirable characters. While receiving the certificate, I looked over to my parents who had big smiles on their face, they were very proud. Being a member of NJHS made me realize I play an important role in the community.

Eligibility is determined by your cumulative grade point average, which must meet or exceed our chapter’s standard for scholarship -currently a cumulative GPA of 3.0, as well as a minimum of 30 service hours. In addition of these qualities, I am an active participant within the extracurriculars in my school. While in 9th grade, and 10th grade, I participated in many activities, as indicated in the packet attached to this essay. And, outside of school, I enjoy going to piano and art lessons. Through the collected efforts of these activities, I have gained crucial knowledge and other attributes that helped me contribute to society, and to become a better leader.

The only extracurricular activity I am a part of as of now, is Key club. I am an active member and commit approximately 20 hours of community service a semester. In Middle School I was a part of NJHS, Student Congress, and WEB (middle school equivalent to Link Crew). Within the next year, I plan on joining NHS as well as Link Crew.

I did not list any activities because I am a student that receives my education from multiple sources. I attend classes at my local high school, George Wythe and also at Wytheville Community College. In addition, some of my course work is taught on line and the professor is telecast to our computers. I am a member of National Honor Soceity through my accaemics at the high school, but I also am a member of Phi Theata Kappa through the community college. I have been able to obtain two honor society memberships since I am a dual enrollment student. However, I have participate in many academic and extracurricular activities. Throughout the duration of my high school career, I have participated in a multitude of various extracurricular activities including Varsity volleyball, club volleyball, National Honor Society, Key Club, and Mathletes. I believe that I have involved myself in this wide range of activities in order to enjoy the company of individuals who appreciate the importance of both academics and athletics as much as I do. Personally, academics have always been a top priority of mine as a result of my parents placing such a significant importance on grades as a child. Consequently, I have participated in organizations such as National Honor Society and Mathletes where I surround myself with others similar to myself that follow a certain academic standard.

As I worked my way through middle school, I would have never imagined that I would be as involved as I am today. From academic clubs like Science Olympiad and Robotics to service clubs like National Honor Society, Student Council and Key Club, my involvement in extracurriculars has been a positive challenge in a variety of ways. Key club in particular has pushed me to improve my community, expand my social life and prepare me for my future after high school.

It is important for adolescents to participate in extracurricular activities. Student who participate in these activities improve their academic scores and social life. Extracurricular activities can also help reduce many peer pressure related problems. “They enrich the lives of the students, their families and our communities. These activities create well rounded children who learn what their interests and talents are because they have been exposed to such opportunities” (Extracurricular Activities, Blogadmin). For most adolescents extracurricular activities should be required among what they do outside of school.

I chose this topic because I almost spend just as much time on extracurricular activities as I do with school.
