Factors Affecting Criminal Behavior

Over time criminologist have developed different thoughts on the factors that lead to criminal behavior. Sociological theories examine environment and the external forces that lead an individual to crime, biological factors are that which are inherited through DNA and psychological is that of the thought process and personality. For the purposes of this research paper I will only focus on psychological theories and three of the psychological factors. There are many psychological factors that affect criminal behavior and when evaluating a person multiple may apply. The three I will focus on are Impulsiveness, lack of empathy, and Narcissism. I will attempt to explain how the knowledge of these factors contribute, influence and affect the treatment of an offender. Impulsiveness according to the Merriam- Webster dictionary is acting without fore thought or in the moment. An impulsive person can act on desires and not think about consequences. This behavior can result in a person resorting to crime as a means to satisfaction. Impulsivity is a normal human behavior but according to (Grant, Odlaug,& Kim) the disorder is characterized by difficulties in resisting urges to engage in behaviors that are excessive and/or ultimately harmful to oneself or others.. For instance, the candy isle by the check out register is by design. They are intentionally put there to pray on a person and or children’s impulse.
