Suicide is an act of taking one’s own life. There are many risk factors that lead to suicide. Risk Factors are condition or features that augment the probability that a person can commit suicide. It is the result of many factors such as health factors, environmental factors, and Historical factor. The more the risk factor the higher the probability of suicide. Studying these factors and understanding them can help in finding protective factors to end or minimize risk factors. Protective factors for suicide buffer the person who wants to commit suicide from suicidal thoughts and behavior. They enhance resilience and may serve to counterbalance risk factors.

Intimate partner problems, physical health problems, as well as job and financial issues have been mentioned by the CDC (2015), as precipitating factors for suicide. According with statistics from the CDC (2015), suicide between 15-24 years old was the second cause of death in the United State in 2013 and the third cause among children 10-14 years old. There are numerous risk factors associated with suicide such as previous family history of suicide or suicide attempts, history of child abuse, history of substance or alcohol
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has published a fact sheet of statistics on suicide in the United States. In 2007, it is reported that suicide was the tenth leading cause of death. Furthermore, for every suicide committed, eleven were attempted. A total of 34,598 deaths occurred from suicide with an overall rate of 11.3 suicide deaths per 100,000 people. (NIMH, 2010). Risk factors were also noted on this report and listed “depression and other mental disorders, or a substance abuse disorder (often in combination with other mental disorders). More than ninety percent of people who die by suicide have these risk factors (NIMH, 2010).”
Having some personal issues is also a main cause of suicide such as being sexually abuse, homosexual preferences, and self- identity and a trauma (according to Edwin Shneidman) which includes poor health, example asthma, obesity, and multiple illness .
Generally, people who are diagnosed with specific psychological disorders are at higher risk of suicide and statistics show that nine out of ten people who commit suicide were suffering with a mental disorder. Psychological risk factors can be associated with an individual’s psychiatric disorders, with their environmental factors, or both. (Larson, Lutes, Orgera, & Suplick Benton). The main suicide risk factors are hostile life events and a lack of mental health care treatment. The American Association of Suicidology states that if depression is left untreated it can lead to comorbid (occurring at the same time) mental disorders, recurrent episodes and higher rates of
Although higher prevalence may occur in some countries, there are generally no cultural associations. Families of suicide victims will often state they cannot recall much leading up to the death or that the individual was never really that sad. Unfortunately, suicide is often an outcome of extreme mental anguish without the ability or desire to carry on with normal life expectations. While not all reasons can point back to preventative measures or risk factors, there are certain issues to be aware of when looking at risk associated with an individual. Risk factors
Suicide is is the act of intentionally causing one's own death. Risk factors include mental illness such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, alcoholism, or drug abuse. People choose suicide when they are hopeless or when they think there isn’t anyone that cares for them anymore. They can also choose this if they think there isn’t an end to their suffering or to their problem. Most of the time this happens because of depression and in some cases bullying, it can also happen because of alcohol or because of a major stressful event that has happened. Suicide can really happen anywhere and at any time.Suicide is a problem that exists because the numbers of suicide keep going up and won’t come down.
Although there are no single reasons for why a person might have suicidal thoughts, there are factors that increase the risk. Suicidal thoughts are usually caused by an overwhelming life situation that is difficult to cope with. Mental Health Daily claims that “People are most driven to suicide when they view their current situation as being completely hopeless and feel as if they have no way to change things for the better.”(“Causes”) Death of someone close or a critical loss will often affect a person negatively. Some might just have a loss of hope in life. Like there is no reason to live. Mental illness is one of the leading causes of suicide. Having an underlying psychiatric disorder, such as major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder or bipolar disorder are major causes for suicide. According to Caruso, “Untreated depression is the number one cause for suicide.” Some people with these disorders can not control themselves, and if the illness is untreated, suicide can be an
The suicide lethality assessment has some strengths in that it identifies important suicide risk factors. The risk factors includes age, sex, stress, suicidal plan, feelings, behavioral changes, network, future outlook, perceived reactions
We know today that one major cause of suicide is depression, and there is a lot of different factors that lead to depression. Things like bullying, death, divorce, and stress can all be things that cause depression. Janice Shaw Crouse wrote an article talking about teen suicides and in her writing she stated“…more than 90 percent of
Clinicians should be aware of risk factors of suicidal behavior, however, warning signs of suicide tend to provide clinicians with more information when faced with the task of making a quick decision regarding the safety of a client. For example, depression is a risk factor for suicidal behavior, however, less than 15 percent of individuals with depression attempt suicide (Goldsmith et al. 2002). Therefore, focusing on a risk factor such as depression alone will not be as effective as also assessing
Teen suicide has many factors that contribute to this horrible death of so many teens. The main factors are feeling of hopelessness and alienation, homosexuality, concerns about AIDS, depression and many other problems. A
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States (Comer, 2016). For every one suicide, twenty-five more make an attempt. It is becoming a major mental health concern as the rate of suicidal behavior and death by suicide increases yearly worldwide. There is no single cause for suicide ideation or behavior, however; there are triggering factors that can precipitate or motivate someone to attempt suicide (Comer, 2016). These factors include drug or alcohol abuse and stressful life events or changes. Suicide is commonly accompanied by other mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. Treatments for suicide occur after a suicide attempt has been made or to prevent suicide from happening.
Some people who commit suicide are those who have psychological disorders, because of the symptoms that go alone with those disorders, such as depression. When one is depressed, they have a feeling of hopelessness and helplessness which may lead to them feeling like they don't want to be alive anymore. There is also a neurobiological model. Heritability is believed to play a role in suicide attempts. Low levels of serotonin
Statements of hopelessness and suicidal comments are a major sign of suicide. Other warning signs can be an increase in alcohol and drug uses, along with various mood swings. Most people who commit suicide do not have the intention to die, but to end their pain. There is no one cause to suicide, but there are many risk factors that can lead to someone’s suicide. Most people who commit suicide have some kind of mental illness like bipolar disorder, major depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Previous attempts at suicide is a large risk factor for it to occur again. Substance abuse disorders like alcoholism patients have high suicide rates as well. Suicide occurance can also be increased by social factors like bullying, abuse, relationship, and work status. Lastly, other major stressors like insomnia, health problems, and loss of loved one can be a risk factor in suicide. However, having these risk factors does not always mean suicide will occur. There are several diverse methods of suicide. Firearms account for almost 50% of all suicides. Areas with higher gun ownership tend to have higher suicide by gun rates. Suffocation, like hanging, accounts for around 11,000 suicide deaths a
There are three types of causes: Environmental, Socio-cultural, and Biopsychosocial. Environment causes are linked to stressful life events and are the following: social loss or a loss of a significant other, access to lethal means like firearms or drugs, being exposed to suicide, being a victim of harassment, bulling or physical abuse. This is very similar to Socio-cultural causes which is caused by trauma or isolation that include: being isolated or not being accepted by others, difficulty seeking help or support, lack of access to mental health or substance abuse treatment, following a belief system that accepts suicide, exposure to suicidal behavior. The next cause is Biopsychosocial which is mental disorders or genetics. This includes such: depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety disorder, personality disorder, substance abuse, being abused as a child or experiencing trauma, a family history if suicide, previous attempts of suicide, or having a chronical disease. Most of the time, people who commit suicide have multiple causes at once. This leads to taking extreme measures. Such as maybe killing themselves after they have killed multiple other people (April Kahn; Kevin Caruso, Janice C.
